Message From The Principal: Staci Ross-Morrison
Are your students required to speak?
As a district, our focus has been Academic Discussion. This year, high school principals are looking to see how much our students are required to speak in class? Thursday, we did a learning walk at CCPA and saw many students speaking, reading, elaborating on ideas and building language. Our tool called us to take a snap shot of what students were doing every 3 minutes in their block period class and compiled the data in useful graphs that were easy to disaggregate. I plan to share this tool with our Admin team and eventually the ILT. I wonder how often Tech students are required to speak and if there are students who are not required to speak throughout the day?
If you are interested in coming along on walk-throughs, reach out to an administrator. I would love to share what I am learning.
Lets Make School Funner!
Goal: By June 2020, the Tech staff will redesign their curriculum for our block schedule to support and engage all students in their classes.
To accomplish this, we will design curriculum that
Infuses joy and active learning.
Builds off and aligns best teacher practices.
Includes ongoing formative assessments that build up to a relevant Capstone project.

college Crunch Week: October 21-25
College Crunch
College crunch will be coming up next week on M,T,Th,and Friday and for a 2nd time the week before Thanksgiving break. We have been very clear with students that they will only be admitted if they have a college crunch pass (Ms. Hunter will leave these in your mailboxes for mixed grade or senior teachers) or a blue pass. Please help us by sending students with a pass so we can try and keep students from skipping classes they need to be in.
Students have received this flyer, but if you could post it in your rooms as well that would be great! If you are a senior teacher and would like to bring your whole class down, please email me directly so I can schedule you for a date to make sure we have enough computers.
IEP Support
Compliance remains an important priority and indicator of quality in our district's Special Education service continuum. For each child with a disability who requires Specialized Academic Instruction, the IEP serves as a critical driver of instruction and student supports. We are committed to holding every IEP on time. This means that annual reviews must be completed at least once per year before the date of the last review, and triennials must be held no more than three years from the date of the last evaluation. This year, we are monitoring our timely completion of initial referrals for Special Education, as well, which must be completed within 60 days of our receipt of a signed assessment plan.
Raul Nunez is able to assist with SEIS needs on Monday and Wednesday 2:30 to 4:30 at Cole on a drop-in basis. He can be reached at raul.nunez@ousd.org.
If you need assistance with writing IEPs, please feel free to email peggy.forbes@ousd.org or call her at (510) 879.8090. Peggy's office hours are every:
Monday 3-5pm, Cole (1011 Union St.)
Thursday 2-4pm, Cole (1011 Union St)
We are offering IEP compliance sessions at bi-monthly IEP camps at Cole from 8:30-11:30:
9/5 , 9/19. 10/3, 10/17, 10/31, 11/14, 11/28, 12/12

Attention 9th Grade Teachers
Standards & Equity Mini-Institute
We are excited to announce that we are hosting a Standards & Equity Mini-Institute, with a focus on 9th grade. Research tells us that we can predict as early as 8th and 5th grade who will be off track for graduation. “Less than 25% of students who are off-track in their freshman year graduate from high school in four years.” (What Matters for Staying On-Track and Graduating in Chicago Public Schools) If we can help students to develop their cultural academic identities, they will have greater access to grade-level instruction.
As a result of participating in this institute, OUSD 9th grade teachers will...
Explain why access to standards-based instruction is an equity issue
Explain how standards progressions can be used to move students toward grade-level standards
Commit to engaging all students by utilizing their assets (culture, language, and experience) to access grade-level instruction
Make connections between developmentally-appropriate strategies that support 9th grade students and grade-level instruction
Who: Teachers of Algebra 1, Biology 9, English 9, and Ethnic Studies
When: Saturday, October 26, 9:00am - 3:30pm
Where: MetWest High School, 314 E 10th St
For a more detailed overview, please refer to this document.
Light breakfast, lunch, and stipends will be provided.
If you attended the June Standards & Equity Institute or the August New Teacher Institute, please still join us in October! We will have new content, focused on the 9th grade experience.
