Define
A nation wide revolt lasting from October 23 to November 10, 1956 against the Hungarian Peoples Republic, and it's soviet policies. It was the first major threat to the Soviets since the Nazis. While it failed it still lit the fuse of the soviets decline.
Details
Cause: During WW2 Hungary was allied with the Axis Powers, and when Germany was defeated the Soviet Union occupied Hungary. The Soviets overthrew the multi party democratic government that was in place and replaced it with a communist government known as the Hungarian Working People's Party. This caused an economic decline in Hungary and after the Warsaw Pact Hungarian citizens began a time of unrest leading to a nationwide revolt.
Characteristics:
- The Hungarian revolt started as a student demonstration that caught the attention of many who joined.
- The Soviets answered the unarmed protestors with tanks and shooting at them from the rooftops.
Significance: This revolt caused thousands of Hungarians to be arrested, deported, and sentenced to death as punishment another 200 thousand fled as refugees. It also started the decline and eventual collapse of the Soviet Union by demonstrating for satellite states and the Allied Powers that rebellion was possible.
