👀Principal's Peek at the Week👀
Hello Slater Nation!
We are in the final stretch of the 2023-2024 school year, and we couldn't be more proud of the fantastic accomplishments of our FHU Students!
Over the past two weeks, students have participated in our largest ever career fair, celebrated a school year of amazing student-leadership, and have been recognized at the First WORLDS robotics competition (see the detailed description below).
We are also proud to have the next issue of The Occasional Slater (our student newspaper) published this week. The student group put together a wonderful 8-page newspaper covering everything from early college to an advice column (my favorite section is the "Hallway Talk"!).
Everyday I am filled with gratitude to be able to work with your children. Each kid brings a unique gift to our Slater community!
Have a great week!

🤖 IBOT Robotics Team 🤖
For the first time ever, the IBOT team decided to put together a presentation and compete for the coveted Impact Award.
(The FIRST Impact Award (formerly Chairman’s Award) is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.)
The team interviewed at Week 3, in Reading, Mass., and were selected to compete at the District Championships against 11 other teams. Ultimately, they won the Impact Award at the District Championships! This gave them an automatic spot in Houston "Worlds" again this year. They also would have qualified on their robots standings as they finished 17th out of 185 teams in New England (the top 25 teams were invited to Worlds).
At Worlds, which was over spring vacation last week, they were not selected as the Impact Award winner for 2024. While this was very disappointing, they went on to accomplish another amazing feat. But first, a little bit of background on what Worlds is...
Teams from all over the world (yes, the world) come together and they are split up into 8 fields of approximately 75 teams per field. They play qualification matches to determine who is going to be team captains of the field alliances. The top 8 teams get to select 3 other teams to compete with during double elimination playoffs. The winners of each field (the 8 top alliances in the world) then go on to the Einstein field to compete for the world title.
The 2nd seed alliance captain (also a NE team) on our field, Hopper, selected us as one of their teammates. The team's alliance went on to WIN the Hopper field and advanced to Einstein! They went on to battle it out with the other top 7 alliances and ended up 4th in the world!
The coaches, mentors and parents could not be more proud of the accomplishments that these kids have worked so hard to achieve. They have represented Vermont in more 'firsts' in the last 2 months than any of us ever expected and it was one heck of a way to end FHUMHS's Anthony Campbell's senior year on the team.

Portrait of a Graduate
April 30th at 5:30 PM
The "Portrait of a Graduate" is a statement that captures what we value as a community for every student that graduates from FHUMHS. It is a living and breathing document that is reviewed and adjusted over time. FHUMHS is currently updating it Portrait of a Graduate and needs your help! On April 30th, at 5:30 pm, we will be holding an in-person community forum to gather thoughts and ideas from all of our stakeholders. This will be an opportunity for our community members to give feedback on the draft statement found below. We will hold follow-up meetings on May 14th and May 21st at 5:30 pm, as well. Please feel free to review the document on your own and send your input to Ben Worthing at bworthing@svuvt.org. Thank you for supporting our students!
