District Hosts Annual PBIS Bash
The District's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support team hosted its annual Back-to-School Bash on Friday. This event was an opportunity for District departments to provide needed information, supplies and resources to families, but that's not all, according to PBIS Coordinator Curlandra Smith.
“We’re going to have our sponsors and our community to wrap their arms around the students and the parents to help meet that need as well, so we’re starting off hoping to build that excitement for a great 2022-23 school year," she said.Students who attended were able to receive bookbags, supplies, books and even COVID-19 vaccinations. This event was made possible due to the contributions of the following community partners: The Mentor's Project, Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, Kelly Education, Bibb Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Atrium Health Navicent, MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union, Bibb County Department of Family and Children Services, Macon Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Delta Pi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., First Quality Baby Products and Project AWARE.
Convocation Kicks Off School Year
On July 25, teachers and staff brought the energy for Convocation 2022 at Luther Williams Field - a historic location for a historic 150th anniversary of Bibb County School District. New Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims held nothing back for his first Convocation, reminding teachers and staff that we are all #Built4Bibb!

Weaver's Collins Named Teacher of the Year
During Convocation, the Bibb County School District named Weaver Middle School health and physical education teacher CaTeah Collins its Teacher of the Year. Collins was chosen from among all school-level winners in the District after an application and interview process.
“It is important that my students understand the importance of at least trying to learn a skill as opposed to immediately being defeated by the thought of attempting it,” she said. “As a teacher, this is one of the things I’m most proud to say that I’ve been able to accomplish.”
Entering her 10th year in education, Collins has also served as head coach for girls’ track, volleyball and basketball. Recently, her teams won championships in both basketball and volleyball. In the classroom, Collins places emphasis on an international sports unit that allows students to learn about games and activities from across the world.
Levita Carter of Bernd Elementary School was named runner-up, and the following educators were also finalists for the award: Jana Lambert, Springdale Elementary School; Gina Clark, Southwest High School; and Karston Bradford, W.S. Hutchings College and Career Academy. All the Teachers of the Year will be celebrated at another event in November.
Bibb Students See Growth On Milestones
Georgia Milestones test scores were released in July for the Bibb County School District and the state. These scores reflect the first full school year since 2018-2019 and will serve as a new baseline for progress and growth moving forward. While scores are not all back to pre-pandemic status, Bibb students demonstrated considerably better results in 2021-2022 as compared to 2020-2021. What is most impressive is that Bibb’s student achievement data in the Developing Learner and above categories increased on all 19 End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) Milestones assessments for 2021-2022.
In Bibb, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a general positive trend in Milestones results. When results were released last year, the District experienced a dip in average scores – a trend seen on some level state-wide. Kevin Adams, the District’s Chief Information Officer, pointed out, “our teachers and students worked hard to overcome the challenges presented over the past two years, and we were pleased to see average scores bounce back closer to our pre-pandemic types of achievement numbers. We expect that positive trend to continue this year as our resilient students and determined educators continue meeting the needs of each individual student.”
“We look forward to using these results as a baseline for continued growth during the upcoming year and beyond for all of our students. While we continue to assess students’ needs using these EOG/EOC outcomes and other achievement measures, we are excited about the opportunity to tailor our instruction and supports to specifically meet our students where they are to take them to higher levels of achievement. This, combined with our emphasis on student-centered staff training and development, will position us well to meet identified targets. We are counting on our entire community to join us in this journey toward great gains and more victory for our most precious resources – our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims.
Attorney Donates Gas Cards for Teachers
On July 22, Attorney Forrest B. Johnson visited L.H. Williams Elementary and John R. Lewis Elementary to show his firm's appreciation for teachers. In addition to a $10,000 donation to the Bibb County Education Foundation, Forrest B. Johnson & Associates donated $100 gas gift cards to each of the teachers at those schools.
"I know your jobs are hard because you're doing more than teaching," he said.
