Curriculum Update - 6th grade Pre-AP Math
We looked critically at the best ways to accomplish this goal. It was determined that we will work through our Math curriculum in such a way that all 6th grade learners, beginning in fall 2014, will take Pre- AP 6th Grade Math. This means that in 6th grade, learners will complete all of the 6th grade curriculum, as well as a great portion of the 7th grade curriculum. When students then move to 7th grade they will continue in the 7th grade Pre-AP which continues the 7th grade standards as well as all of the the 8th grade curriculum. Once these students then reach 8th grade they will take Pre-AP Algebra 1. This sequence will allow students to go to high school with one completed high school mathematics credit and sets them up to be able to take 4 additional years of math. This will allow students to have room in their schedule to gain the STEM endorsement credit for their diploma, which requires 5 high school mathematics credits. We believe this will translate into increased college/career readiness.
We know that this will be a challenge and will require various levels of support to ensure success of our learners. We commit to doing so. We are excited to raise our expectations and provide children with a quality Math education!
This year's 7th and 8th graders have not all received this same accelerated curriculum so they will still take Regular or Pre-AP sections of Math based upon what they took last year to ensure they have the adequate foundation they need moving forward.
