In Case You Missed It:
One of our ways to deter and redirect off task behavior is to bounce to another classroom. Please make sure that when you bounce a child, it is on your hallway (same grade level) and is only for a short period (max time: until the end of that period). Bouncing the same child from your class should not be a daily/regular occurrence. If it is, then you should be in contact with parent and must be trying something different (problem solving), because this intervention is not working. If you are unable to reach a parent, please let an administrator or front office know and we will copy all the contacts from PS for you to try.
Please reflect on your frequent flyers that you bounce and/or write up.
- Are you giving them a fresh start each day/each class period?
- Have you met one-on-one with the student to try to find out what the issue/s is/are?
- What can you do to help the student/s be more successful?
Many of you saw someone shadowing administrators last week. Wendy Motley Bryant, art teacher from Broadway Elementary, is in the PPEERS, Principal Preparation for Excellence and Equity in Rural Schools, through UNCG and was observing the culture and climate at SLMS. Thank you to those who allowed her to come in your room, sit in during post conferences, and answering her questions.
If you were not able to meet with the Mark III Advisors about the new supplemental benefits being offered, there will be someone at Central Office until the end of the month. Please see me if you need to set up a time to take care of this before it is too late.
I appreciate everyone's flexibility with the late buses last week. We have been in a real bind all year with sub drivers. When one of our regular drivers is out, we are having to run double routes to get our kids to school. This in turn causes a bus to not get here until after the tardy bell. This is not what we want, but is necessary in a pinch. I appreciate our classroom teachers with bus license; Tommy Harrington, Jake Stevens, Christina Reed, and Kimberly Morrill, for helping whenever they are available. SanLee has the best bus drivers that run daily routes! They care so much and will jump in any bus and help wherever needed to ensure our kids get to school safely. I am in awe of the positive attitudes and teamwork. Thank you!
March 7 we will have over 60 AVID District Directors from across the United States to come and visit SLMS for approximately and hour and a half. We are given specific directions that Vincent sent out. Part of what they asked was to be in classrooms for 50 minutes. They will be in 9 groups of 6-7 visiting classrooms for 10 minutes and can only go into classrooms of teachers that are AVID Certified. The tentative schedule is here. If you are on the schedule and see a problem, PLEASE let me know ASAP. ALL teachers will be expected to fill out the AVID lesson plan template with a WICOR infused lesson and post outside your classroom. If you are being visited, please plan to implement one of the following (Socratic Seminar, Philosophical Chairs, Collaborative Study Groups, Marking the Text, Focused Note-taking (steps 2-5).
