The Bear Bulletin
March 2024
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL ROBERTSON
I hope this letter finds you and your families well. This week's weather gave us a little preview of spring. The days are getting warmer and the sun is not setting so early in the evening. We are more than half-way through our school year and have a busy few months ahead of us preparing for FY25 and finishing our current year strong.
Starting this month, our students will begin required state and county assessments. Please see more information about schedules and expectations in the bulletin. We need your help in ensuring that your students are present on testing days and get a good night's sleep.
In addition, Kindergarten Registration begins this month. If you or anyone you know has a student who turns 5 by September 1, 2024 it is time to register for kindergarten. Unlike previous years, MCPS will not be holding formal kindergarten orientation for incoming kindergarten students. Please see more information is included in this month's bulletin.
In addition, we are thrilled to announce that Barnsley will be adding a section of Pre-K to our building this fall. Pre-K registration is done centrally through the early childhood offices. If you are interested in registering you can do so in person at Rocking Horse Road Center or online. Please see below for more information.
We look forward to a great month and a restful Spring Break at the end of the month.
Sincerely,
Ms. Robertson

MARCH IS MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH
March is Music in Our Schools Month. To celebrate, please encourage your child/children to wear a music shirt (band shirts count!) when they attend any of their music classes (music class, instrumental music or chorus). If they don't have a shirt with any music reference, you can always add music notes to any shirt by following these easy steps:
1. draw notes on paper
2. cut notes out
3. Tape them to the shirt on music day.
Please see examples in the pictures.
The March Music Madness brackets are back! We will do a Staff Favorites to see which song is our school’s favorite.
Thank you!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Each academic year, we look forward to welcoming kindergarten students to school. In an effort to ensure that our students maximize the total number of school days and reduce the burden on current kindergarten families, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will no longer offer the traditional kindergarten orientation model.
MCPS will shift from the traditional kindergarten orientation to kindergarten registration. Classes for current kindergarten students will not be canceled for an orientation event this year.
For the 2024-2025 school year, Kindergarten registration will be online through the ParentVUE portal starting March 18th.
More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
Pre-K IS COMING TO BARNSLEY NEXT YEAR!!
Prekindergarten and Head Start registration begins Friday, March 1, for the 2024-2025 school year. Children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2024, and families must be income-eligible to apply. Families can register their children online or in person.
If your child was 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2023, you may still register for Prekindergarten/Head Start for the remainder of this school year. Registration is NOT done at Barnsley ES. All registration for Pre-K is done through the MCPS Early Childhood Office.

For more information about eligibility guidelines, required documents or how to register online, call 240-740-4530 or visit the MCPS website.
APRIL 22nd MAKE-UP DAY
Monday, April 22 is now an asynchronous learning day and will be used as a make-up instructional day for students. Students will be sent home with assignments to complete independently.
Asynchronous learning describes educational activities and assignments that engage students in learning without live instruction or use of technology. Students must complete assignments to count towards their attendance for the day. Additional time for students to complete assignments will be granted for any challenges or unforeseen circumstances. WE NEED TO HEAR YOUR VOICE
We want to hear from you on how we are doing. MCPS is inviting ALL students, staff and parents/caregivers to share your experiences and thoughts on academics, communication, and overall satisfaction with your school and the district and/or experience working at MCPS. Your input and insight are essential in helping us understand what is working well and areas of improvement. Your participation and any identifying information are completely confidential. The feedback collected will be used to inform decisions and help create a more supportive and enriching environment for students, staff, and families in our district.
Click here to access more information about the surveys.
The survey will be open until March 15.
