PROHIBITION
The 18th amendment banned alcohol. Many people were for it, and many were against it. This is when the speakeasies and bootleggers came along.
THE ROARING TWENTIES
The 1920s, is known as the ROARING TWENTIES because it is known as the BOOM time. It is post war and our economy is sky rocketing!
BABE RUTH
Now that electricity has come about, people have leisure time. Now that the economy is booming, people have more time off instead of working 16 hour days.
FLAPPERS (UNTRADTIONAL WOMEN)
- 19th Amendment gave the women the right to vote
- Most women became flappers, which is were the women cut their hair in a bob, wore more make-up, and wore shorter dresses
CHARLIE CHAPLIN
Famous actor of the twenties. Grew up in an orphanage due to drunken father and a mother who spent time in a lunatic asylum.

URBAN STREETS IN 1920
Now that the model T was released and even the common man could purchase one, streets became busier than ever.
FORD'S ASSEMBLY LINE
Ford used an assembly line to create the model T. This opened up tons of jobs for all people. They got $5.00 an hour.
SPEAKEASIES
Speakeasies were a private bar or club that sold alcohol illeagally. The prohibition banned the use and selling of alcohol. People would come to these to still get alcohol.
Gangsters of the 1920s
AL "Scarface" CAPONE
Al Capone was perhaps the most notorious gangster in history. He was inducted into the Five Points Gang as a child and eventaully grew up to be a major gang leader in Chicago. Capone was seen by many as a heartless brute that stole and murdered, but to a few he was seen as a modern Robinhood due to several donations made to charities with the stolen money.
DUTCH SCHULTZ
His original name was Arthur Flegenheimer, but was given the name Dutch Schultz after he committed his first crime at 17 years old. He was a very successful saloon owner in New York. His methods were greatly questioned however. He even tortured a man who refused to buy some of his beer.
CHARLES "Lucky" LUCIANO
His original name was Salvatore Luciana. As a child he moved to New York City, however, he didn't know English making his School days difficult. Despite this obsticle, he was able to get by, by beating up kids who didn't pay him enough for their protection. He grew up to become one of the "Big Six" bootleggers. He gained the name Lucky when he was kidnapped by a rival gang, beaten and stabbed, then left on the beach to die.
