MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS
166th EDITION: October 2, 2020
From the Desk of Mr. Mike Shukis
Throughout my first year I began to tackle the question of, “What is Marian Central Catholic High School?” Who are we or better yet, who are we becoming? Asking around gave me a few good insights and what follows are some of those ideas combined with some of my own thoughts.
- At Marian Central, our community is built upon the words of the Gospel – prayer, love, forgiveness, nonjudgement, humility, and truth.
- Marian Central is a college prep high school that fosters responsible leadership, scholarship, spiritual growth and appreciation for the power of service.
Community, Responsible Leadership, Scholarship, Spiritual Growth, and Service all describe who we are and who we need to strive to become. We, however, need a strong foundation for which to build upon these qualities at Marian Central. I feel strongly that they can only be built on a foundation of Grace and Truth. In the Bible, Grace and love are often interchangeable. Grace is often times thought of as love or “getting along, being friends, being nice” and if you can’t be good you will be forgiven. To put it another way, Grace is unconditional love and acceptance. Therefore, Grace should be thought of as being the first ingredient needed in the construction of our foundation as it will also lead us in growing up in the image of God. In the end Grace will support all of us, the Marian faculty/staff, and students, to be who we truly are.
The only problem is that when Grace is alone, we can easily hear very little Truth spoken. With just Grace and no Truth, we can keep falling into the same old patterns over and over again. At times, we all need a little guidance. This is where Truth comes in. Truth will clearly show us the difference between what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is not good. More importantly, God’s Truth leads us to what is real, to what is accurate. Truth must be the second ingredient necessary for Marian to grow in the image of God. Truth and Grace must become equal parts to comprise Marian Central’s foundation.
How do I see Marian? I see Mary our Mother, answering our prayers for her beloved school and blessing us with a strong foundation of Grace and Truth. As we fill our school with love, forgiveness, and the knowledge of what is real and what is accurate, Marian Central will be able to build a strong Community that will include Responsible Leadership, Scholarship, Spiritual Growth, and Service.

COVID-19 Update
Marian Central has not had one student test positive since we moved to the hybrid schedule. We have received word that some family members of our students have tested positive. These students have been tested and will quarantine as necessary. We will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with the MCDH and the Diocese of Rockford, and we look forward to the day we can all be together in our building at the same time.
