Second Semester Falcon Updates
We are Responsible, Resourceful, Respectful, & Receptive!
A Message From Mr. Sutton:
Team, I’d like to share an example of embracing our PowerInChange theme. We started this year by embracing the art work of Minnie Evans, an African American, artist from Wilmington. Her artwork is famous, and can be seen in art museums and at Airlie Gardens, where she worked as a gatekeeper. Minnie Evans used simple art materials such as crayons, and color pencils to create her masterpieces, which were her dreams and culture poured out on paper. Her art was not fully embraced and recognized until she was much older and after her death. Racism, social injustice, discrimination played a significant role in circumstances that delayed the recognition of Minnie Evans talent.
Our art teacher, Ms. Patterson, challenged her students to embrace the art work of Minnie Evans to create their own masterpieces that reflect their dreams. This example of Minnie Evans inspired artwork is by Maya Roseboro, an 8th grader at Murray. It was selected and will be displayed in our front office to remind us to embrace our differences as well as embrace the challenges we’ve faced this year and the dreams we have yet to fulfill.
