American Heart Month
American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind us all to focus on our heart health and encourage our families, friends and community to get involved. In that spirit, and with a desire to honor our local First Responders who help keep us safe every day, Stony Hill will hold an after school event called, "It Takes HEART to Be a Hero" on Thursday, 02/15/18, from 5:00-6:30. I had sent out a 'save the date' along with a call for volunteers a few weeks ago in my connect-ed email. Thankfully, we did get enough volunteers to run this program, but we could still use more. If you have an interest or background in nutrition, fitness, or are in the medical field, please consider running a station at this event. I'm looking for people to help students plan a healthy meal, set goals for more activity, and listen to their hearts with a stethoscope. Even if we do not get additional helpers, we still have plenty of activities for families! Come in at any time and visit as many stations as you like. A flyer with more details will be sent home on Monday, 02/12/18. We hope to see you Thursday evening.
STEAM Ahead
Our STEAM Ahead Program has been amazing! Due to weather, a few classes had to reschedule but we will be wrapping it up this week. The volunteer presenters have done a great job bringing highly engaging integrated learning activities to our students. I hope your children have come home talking about polymers, engineering, or volume and mass because those are just some of the concepts they learned about. Once all activities are done, the School Improvement Council will gather feedback from students and I will present that to you, along with several pictures, in an upcoming Newsletter. Thank you to all who contributed to this program!
Congratulations Mrs. Pszeniczny!
The Federation for Children with Special Needs (FCSN) is an organization that believes that individual differences in people are a natural part of life, and that disabilities provide children and adults with unique perspectives, insights and abilities which contribute to the overall well-being of society. Each year, they seek nominations for their Educator Award for teachers who have shown excellence in creating an inclusive classroom where all children are celebrated and their cultural, linguistic, physical and learning differences are embraced. This year’s winner is our very own Mrs. Pszeniczny! She will be honored at the 2018 FCSN Conference in Boston on March 10th. We are all so proud of her.

Toy Story =)
Teachers, staff and bus drivers have all expressed concerns over conflicts that occur when a child brings a toy, stuffed animal, or electronic device to school. Even the most innocent looking item can spark an argument. Here's a few examples: Child gave a trinket to one friend but not to the other. Child repeatedly 'bopped' another student over the head with a stuffed animal. Child brought Pokemon cards into class, hid them in the desk, and played with them during lessons, Child used an electronic device to show movie trailers to other students. Despite teachers' watchful eye, several reminders, and my intervening on the more serious cases, the problem persists. So, I really need your help. Please be proactive in making sure that only school-related items are in your child's backpack. If there is a special circumstance, then please reach out to me so we can discuss it. We all greatly appreciate your support in helping us decrease arguments and altercations that could easily be avoided by leaving toys at home.
