Macbeth
King of the Slaughter House
The Blame: Lady Macbeth
Literary Devices
- (Quote) - "Third Witch. Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none" (Shakespeare 19).
- (Relation) - What the Third Witch said in the quote above foreshadows what is going to happen in future events. How it does that is by the Third Witch saying part of the prophecy, which is the last part they say for now, where Banquo is supposed to be the father of kings. Now, she has already said that Macbeth would be the King of Scotland, so by saying this, the audience can assume that Macbeth's family ruling would fall at some point or another in order for Banquo's sons to become king.
2. Tragic Hero-
- (Quote) - "I bear a charmed life, which must not yield To one of women born" (Shakespeare 179).
- (Relation) - This quote is said when Macbeth is facing off with Macduff. Macbeth is saying that all men that are born from a women are inferior to him, and he must not snoop down to his level. Macduff says otherwise and afterwards, Macbeth does not agree with it. This ultimately leads to his demise because his judgement led him to thinking he was superior to everyone, becoming overconfident.
3. Dynamic Character-
- (Quote) - "Macbeth. She should have died hereafter; There would have been a time for such a word" (Shakespeare 171).
- (Relation) - When Macbeth said this line in the story, there was definitely a difference between his character in the beginning of the story and now. In the beginning of the story, he was very noble, and deeply in love with Lady Macbeth. But what he said at the castle here seems as if he didn't really care about his wife's death all that much. Possibly a little sorrow, but not noticeable by what he said or his actions.
Character Analysis: Lady Macbeth
Lady Macbeth's motivation is power and ranks. This is why she wanted Macbeth to kill Duncan to obtain royal status.
Key Characteristics [Beginning]:
Lady Macbeth's key characteristics are her personality and abilities of persuasion. Her personality is that she is power-hungry and a controlled insane. The controlled insane is how she can act normal in any given situation. Although, she has problem in terms of thoughts and emotion. You can tell when her insane side is kicking in when she says to herself to "...unsex me here, And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full Of direst cruelty!" (Shakespeare 35) which is something that a normal person would not say. She also can persuade people in order to do what she wants them to do. Her main 'victim' for this trick is Macbeth.
Key Characteristics [Ending]:
Lady Macbeth's characteristics change as the book goes on. Near the end, she is unable to hide her emotions properly, mainly in her sleep when she is asleep. This is how the Gentlewoman and the Doctor found out, as "...[her] sense [was] shut" (Shakespeare 155). She also shows actions that happened earlier in the story that was off stage, and was saying "Out, damned spot! out, I say!" (Shakespeare 155) as if she was telling the spot to do something to make it easier to wash off. She becomes even more insane as well, which her insanity leads more towards the fear side than pure power-hunger.
Personal Opinion:
My opinion on Lady Macbeth is she is a devious character, who manipulates people, mainly her husband, to have things the way that she wants. At the same time, she is a character that made me uncomfortable, mainly because she is insane.
Never Gonna Give You Up (Rickroll) by Rick Astley -----> Macbeth's Co-dependence
(0:42)[first time]
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna let you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie, and hurt you
Macbeth never wants to let Lady Macbeth down by being a 'chicken' and not do what she ask. He doesn't want to make Lady Macbeth upset, or other words, "give her up". This is true as Macbeth eventually does murder King Duncan with the help of Lady Macbeth, and only considered it because Lady Macbeth actually said anything about it.
(1:00)
We've known each other, for so long
Your heart's been aching but
Your too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
This verse describes what Macbeth is going to do to essentially 'keep' Lady Macbeth. He is going to 'play the game' (a.k.a. kill Duncan) in order to keep Lady Macbeth. He will also keep it a secret, even though they know what happened.
