PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Dear Families;
First and foremost, I hope you and your extended families are safe from the fires and the smoke. I am aware of several in our extended community who have been significantly affected and I know you join me in wishing them well.
As of this afternoon we are finished with the Soft Start schedule and will begin the Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) instructional schedule on Monday, September 14. While there have been several bumps rolling out the soft start, in many ways we accomplished the primary purposes of making contact with students and families, delivering devices to families, becoming familiar with the new platforms, providing initial social emotional learning lessons and trouble shooting problems. I knew it would be challenging but it was harder than I thought it would be. Many pieces of information have come late and I apologize for my contributions to that. In many areas this has been out of my control however. I will be able to catch up on emails this weekend but I have definitely not met my goal of returning all emails in a timely fashion. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Arleta staff for their dedication and hard work to prepare for students. They have been tireless.
Instructional Schedules
Arleta K-5 Master Schedule 2020-21 Family View
Arleta 6-8 Master Schedule 2020-21 Family View
These are the same schedules as the ones I shared yesterday. I would have preferred to have shared them earlier but they were not approved by the central office until Wednesday evening. I have added additional information on the K-5 schedule that should help you interpret them more easily. You will see that the synchronous and asynchronous learning times are identified using the following key:
Key
(S)=synchronous, (A)=asynchronous, (A/S)=asynchronous or synchronous,
Applied Learning is for completing assigned work
As a reminder, synchronous learning is live instruction and requires a student to be present. At this point in time the district has not determined if the instruction can legally be recorded and made available for later viewing by a student due to student confidentiality laws. Asynchronous learning is a recorded lesson of some type and can be viewed at any time during the day or evening. Applied Learning is time allocated for students to complete assigned work and can be done at any time during the day or evening. While there is a specific schedule for each grade level provided to show how the work can be completed during the standard school day, you are free to complete things on a schedule that works for your family.
Only the synchronous learning must be completed at the time scheduled. Some subjects can be delivered synchronously or asynchronously so you will have to get specific information from your teacher about which method will be used for a specific lesson. Your teacher will also need to communicate with you about small group instruction times.
There is a lot of information in the schedule and your teacher may provide it differently, in a form that is easier for you to digest. This version is useful for looking across grade levels and is comprehensive.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend school everyday, just as when we are in the building for instruction. Evidence of attendance will be measured in at least one of the following ways within a 24 hour period:
Participating in a video class (synchronous).
Communication from the student to the teacher via chat, text message, communication app or email.
A phone call between the teacher (or EA/Paraprofessional) with the student, or for younger students, with the parent.
Posting completed coursework to a learning management system or web-based platform (Seesaw or Canvas) or via email.
Turning in completed coursework on a given day.
Student attendance will be recorded for each period they have a class on a given day.
Finally, here is a link to a wonderful video that our staff found encouraging. I hope you do too. https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&v=a71O90UCF1U
I wish everyone well and think we are going to have a great year of learning despite the challenges we face. We all look forward to being back together in the building and that day will come.

NO COST WAYS TO SUPPORT ARLETA
The Arleta PTA participates in THREE no-cost shopping rewards programs - Fred Meyer Community Rewards, AmazonSmile and Bottle Drop.
1. By linking your Fred Meyer Rewards card to the Arleta PTA and scanning your rewards card when you shop, a percentage of your purchase goes to the PTA. Sign up here. (And you'll still get your cash back rewards!)
2. Amazon has a similar program, called AmazonSmile. Select "Arleta School PTA" as your charitable organization to receive donations when you shop Amazon. Once you sign up, just go to smile.amazon.com to do your usual Amazon shopping. While there is no app, you can create a shortcut on your phone by going to smile.amazon.com in your browser, tap the Share button, then tap Add to Homescreen.
3. Donate your redeemable cans and bottles to Arleta through Bottle Drop. Email arletabottledrop@gmail.com to request some blue bags. (Arleta pays a fee for the bags, so let's fill them to the top!)
