Discipline and Growth Mindset: Challenging Our Long-Standing Beliefs
Re-evaluate our Grading Practices.
Many Ss see grades as an accumulation of points they need to obtain instead of a demonstration of mastery. (Hacking Discipline, p98)
- Taking points off for late work. If an Ss shows that he/she has mastered 80% of the material but is penalized for the work being late the grade becomes a reflection of behavior, not knowledge.
- Zeros are mathematically impossible to overcome
- Allow Ss to retake assessments. If we are committed to growth mindset, but we will not allow a Ss to retake an exam and improve we are not walking the walk. Even ACT is now allowing Ss to retake certain portions of the test.
- If you allow a Ss to retake an assessment, don't average the scores. The Ss should earn the grade he or she earned.
- Grading HW/Classwork for accuracy on the first attempt, or quickly moving to graded assessments can create anxiety and stress.
- Teach Ss how to study, organize and process information. We talk about self-care all the time as a staff, yet we do not always practice what we know is good for us. We need rest time, family time, socializing and exercising and so do our students.
- Encourage them to study for a few minutes each day or try to dedicate 10th period to 1 subject that you know would benefit from having a 5 min review each day. This is great for very difficult concepts and shows that we have HIGH expectations (Modeling How to Study)
- The concept of high expections does not mean no mnistakes, no second chances, or moving fast. It means: doing challenging things, doing challenging things unitl we get them right, working hard, asking ofr help (Hacking Discipline, pg101).
- Try it out: Growth Grade Replacement: Ss choose a skill they ahve not mastered, map out a plan to improve, then offer to replace the current grade upon completing mastery.
Grades, growth mindset and helping Ss grow are all important factors that can help Ss with self-regulation and improving their own self-worth. I know that these may seem far fetched, but dicipline at school and with difficult students is tricky. We need a multi-facted approach to help Ss improve and begin seeing success.
