Senior Graduation Requirements
Dear Parents/Guardians of Senior Students
All seniors in Oregon are required to complete 4 components of the Personal Learning Requirements (PLRs) in order to receive a diploma, in addition to earning the required credits towards graduation. The four components are a Resume, two Career Related Learning Experience Reflections AKA CRLEs, and a My Plan Project. Portland Public Schools is sending letters to students and families this month that share the progress your student has made towards completion of the PLRs. Students were assigned the My Plan Project in their English classes last semester and they turned them into their English teacher. The other three items, CRLEs and the resume, are completed in various classes through the high school experience and are submitted directly to our Career Coordinator, Miranda Ryan.
Students can submit completed work to Ms. Ryan via this link. You can also reach out to her with any questions regarding completion of this important graduation requirement (mryan1@pps.net)
Thank You

April 10th Mental Health News Corner
Each week our BHS Student Support Specialists (Counselors, Social Workers, School Psychologists, & Therapists) will be including Mental Health Awareness. This week we are focused on How to Show Up for Teens When Big Emotions Arise.
Parenting may be the hardest job in the world, and the teenage years are, by their very nature, a struggle. Teens are charged with the important and challenging tasks of developing personal identity and learning how to navigate increasingly more complex social environments. Throw in an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, hormones, and an increased urge for independence and conflict is almost inevitable.
This article talks about ways you can support teenagers and the ebb and flow of emotion as it relates to adolescence. How to show up for teens when big emotions arise : Life Kit : NPR. It focuses on being a steady presence, empathy, being active when teens are struggling, and healthy coping mechanisms. You may be doing all of these things and are still seeing concerning behavior, or perhaps are even wondering if they are experiencing depression. Here is an article on supporting your child and steps to take - How to Help a Depressed Teenager - Child Mind Institute.
Ways to help adolescents as a caring adult: “Let them know they can talk to you. Stay Positive. Praise them. Step in with More Support. Take Care of Yourself.”
Reminder: April is both Arab American Heritage Month & Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month - here is an interactive slide with various links to support these communities!

International Exchange Student Opportunities
Share your home for a year, enjoy a friendship for a lifetime.
Dear Families,
Would your family like to experience another custom and culture? Does sharing your America with a student from abroad sound fun and exciting? If so, consider hosting an international exchange for the 23/24 school year. By opening your home and your heart, you will be giving an exceptional young person from another country the opportunity of a lifetime—to live with your family and experience the language, customs, and culture of our country and the beautiful state of Oregon. In return, your exchange student will bring to your family a bit of his or her homeland. Students come from Europe, Asia/Pacific, the Middle East, the Americas, and Africa
If you are able to host, please say "YES!"
Students from around the globe have been selected on the basis of their high academic standing, good-natured and adaptable manners, and their curiosity and sense of adventure. The students who are accepted into the ASSE program radiate their enthusiasm for learning about a whole new way of life.
If it is not the right time to host, but you would like to stay involved, we are also in need of area representatives to work with the students and families. If this is something that interests you, please let me know!
Thank you for your time!
