A Message From the Principal - Mrs. VanderVeen
Welcome Back,
I hope that you had a relaxing and restful Winter Break and are ready for a great 2023. While it was nice to have a break and to take a pause from school, now is the time to resume our hard work and commitment to one’s academics. We have just over 4 weeks to the end of the first semester (Semester One ends on Friday, February 3, 2023) so students who may be struggling in their classes or have grades they aren’t happy with, now is the time for a final push to pass all of your classes. There are many opportunities for students to access additional supports, the best way to start is to be a self-advocate and to talk with your teachers and to regularly attend school. Regular attendance to school is a key strategy in passing classes, making friends, positively engaging in school and simply having a better attitude toward school and great experience.
Some upcoming events at Mariner High School are Culture Week, which occurs on Monday, January 9th through Friday, January 13th. There are many activities planned to celebrate Mariner’s diversity and the many cultures of our students. In the Mariner Student Commons are flags that represent countries where Mariner students and their families are from. This year we will be adding 7 new countries to the student commons which we are very excited about, adding to the many flags already on display. Mariner has a great deal of diversity in it’s student body and this is just one way to celebrate that which make Mariner a very special place. Mariner will also host their Martin Luther King Jr assembly on Thursday, January 12th. This is a must see assembly, with student performances, student speakers, and more.
Throughout the month, we will continue to host winter sporting events, the Winter Play – Steel Magnolias and an upcoming Orchestra concert. At the end of January will be the annual Stinky Shoe rivalry basketball games with Kamiak, this year Kamiak will be the host. This is always a great time.
Thanks for your continued support of your students, Mariner High School and the Mariner community.
Beth C. VanderVeen
Marauders of the Quarter!
Last month we celebrated the Marauder of Quarter for the first quarter. Staff nominated students based on the following criteria:
- Overall improvement,
- Shown a great deal of resiliency,
- Awesome school spirit and pride, and/or
- Served the learning and well-being of Mariner and the classroom.
We are so proud of all the students nominated and those chosen as the Marauders of the Quarter!
Athletics
Attending School Athletic and ASB Activities
Students attending school events such as games, dances, or other activities are expected to remain at the event once they have entered. There is no student re-entry at games, dances, and some school events, should a student leave the event or loiter in unsupervised areas.
Students are expected to depart within fifteen (15) minutes of the end of the event or activity. Large bags and purses may be subject to search prior to entering the event.
Spectator Behavior Expectations For Athletic Events
With Winter sports in full swing, we thought we'd share a reminder about SPECTATOR BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS FOR ATHLETIC EVENTS for all attendees.
School-based athletics are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and the six core principles of character education: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Please be advised that Mukilteo School District has a code of expectations for all spectators participating in school based athletics in order to provide a quality experience and ensure the best possible environment for all student athletes, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
The general rule is, “BE LOUD, BE PROUD, BE POSITIVE”:
- Encourage good sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy to all those in attendance and through social media before, during, and after the game;
- Honor a safe and healthy environment that is free from drugs, marijuana, tobacco and alcohol;
- Never engage in any unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, parent or staff member, such as taunting, singling out, disparaging dialogue, or using profane language or gestures during or after the game;
- Respect the decisions and authority of officials during competitions;
- Respect the property and equipment used at any athletic or school facility;
- Show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team;
- Applaud effort in both victory and defeat—Mariner wins with humility and loses with class.
- Know that signs and posters must be approved by an administrator or game manager;
- Artificial noise makers (cowbells, airhorns, whistles, etc.) are prohibited per WESCO regulations;
- Wear face paint and spirit wear as long as admin/game management can identify you;
- Honor the “Our House, Our Rules” at away sites when supporting Mariner as a fan/spectator (for example, face paint and signage may not be allowed by hosting schools or area arenas).
- Always keep aisles clear. Do not block home or away bleachers from spectators.
See pages 17-20 of the MHS Student Handbook for more information.
In November, Kamiak HS hosted a WESCO Conference Interhigh event with representatives from all WESCO schools in attendance; the focus was on Sportsmanship. Check out the video they created during this awesome event that lays out good sportsmanship at athletic events.

Stay Connected!
The Mukilteo School District uses the ParentSquare communication platform for district, school and teacher communications. ParentSquare provides a secure way for the district, school principal, teachers, staff and families to send and receive school and class information, share pictures and files, see calendar items, sign up to volunteer and much more ... all in one place!
Log in to the ParentSquare webpage here. You may also log in through the app on your mobile device (instructions to download the free app is at the bottom of this page).
Watch a ParentSquare overview video in English or Spanish to learn more about the platform. ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent/guardian, using your preferred email address or phone number, so you will receive communications from your school and the district. However, you must “activate” your account to use the two-way features of the tool.
By activating your account, you’ll be able to:
- Choose to receive information instantly or once a day at 6 p.m. (digest setting)
- Communicate in your preferred language
- Comment on school postings to engage in your school community
- Direct message teachers and staff with translation support
- Sign up for family-teacher conferences
- Sign forms and permission slips ... and more!
Information and news about Mariner High School are available in a variety of formats. This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. As usual, school delays or closures will be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
