Northwest High School Families,
I hope everyone has enjoyed their spring break and for those who celebrated, Happy Easter! We are now entering the last marking period of the 2022-2023 school year and are excited about all the spring happenings upcoming. Be sure to check out all aspects in this Monday edition of Northwest News.
Because Assistant Principal Appreciation Week occurred during spring break, I ask you to help me in recognizing them for all the work our amazing assistant principals do every day. We will be celebrating them throughout this week, April 11 - 14, with small tokens of our appreciation but I ask you all to complete your own Kudos for Assistant Principal Week 2023. Each of them will receive the message you write through their emails.
Beginning April 17, and through May 12, MCPS will be converting building heat to air conditioning. The Northwest specific date has not yet been communicated but as soon as it is, we will update the community. For more on the process, please see the flyer in the newsletter.
A reminder that for students who are interested in getting their learners permit, you will have two more opportunities to take the Learners Permit test at Northwest on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 18. The test will begin promptly at 2:30 in room 100. You should stop by the main office to pick up a permission slip.

NEW: IMPORTANT Message regarding Spring MCAP Testing
Northwest High School will be conducting the Spring Administration of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP). The MCAP provides information to educators, parents, and the public on student progress towards proficiency on the Maryland state content standards. Through a strong assessment system, stakeholders gain an understanding of how schools are performing and where assistance can be directed to support student growth and achievement. We will administer these exams on the following dates:
May 2, 2023: LS MISA
May 4, 2023: HS GOVT
May 12, 2023: ALG 1
May 15, 2023: ELA 10/MAP (9th Grade)
May 16, 2023: ELA 10/MAP (9th Grade)
Please note that although we do not have a delayed opening schedule, only students who will be testing are expected to attend. Students who are expected to test will receive an Information Sheet during JagPaws on April 26th. Any student who does not receive an Information Sheet is not expected to test and will report to the cafeteria for study hall for the duration of testing. Lunch will occur following testing (11:02 am - 11:46 am) and classes will be held following lunch. Please refer to the schedules below. All ninth and tenth grade students are required to report to school to complete their MCAP and MAP Assessments. NEW! American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Maryland Girls State is a summer weeklong learning experience, often held at Salisbury University where rising seniors live in “cities” within a dormitory-like setting. June 18, 2023, through June 23, 2023. The program costs $290 which includes housing, meals, a shirt, and a phone wallet. This is paid for by an American Legion Auxiliary Unit. There is a $45 registration fee that the attendee is responsible to pay, but this fee potentially can be covered by request to the sponsoring American Legion Auxiliary Unit. We encourage all interested young ladies in their junior year of high school to apply and we will work with them in finding a sponsoring unit.
Participants who are direct descendants of US Wartime Veterans or Active-Duty Service members are eligible to apply for the Samsung Scholarship which covers up to $10,000 of the winner’s college tuition. There are a few other scholarships offered as well. All participants can learn, earn college credit, and have fun. Interest form and application should be completed by April 14, 2023. NEW! GoToCollegeFairs will be hosting a first-generation college fair on April 26, 2023. This college fair focuses on post-secondary opportunities for first-generation students. It will provide attendees with information that can assist them in the planning and transition to a college education. We will host a safe and engaging forum for students and their families so they can explore the many available college options and learn from experts on how to make the most of the college experience.

HIGHLIGHT ON MONTGOMERY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: MONTGOMERY COLLEGE RAPTOR READY. SENIORS. Montgomery College offers a $500 tuition scholarship to help 2023 spring Montgomery County high school graduates jump into their academic program in fall 2023. The $500 scholarship will be applied to fall 2023 tuition and fees at Montgomery College. The program is for spring 2023 Montgomery County high school graduates who are Montgomery County residents who register for and attend at least 6 credit hours at Montgomery College in the fall 2023. NEW: Students to End Poverty: STEP
On March 29th, Students To End Poverty hosted a sandwich-packing event in the media center after school. 12 students gathered in the Media Center and made sandwiches with eight loaves of bread, multiple strawberry spreads, and peanut butter jars. All the sandwiches made were donated to the Gaithersburg CARES Hub, an organization that provides food to those in need in our community. It was a great opportunity for students who participated in this event to make a real difference in the lives of people facing food concerns and insecurity. Kudos to the students who participated and donated the ingredients and materials for this event!
NEW: Five (5) Things to Know from MCPS for Thursday, March 30
1. Mid-Year Evidence of Learning Framework Demonstrates Gains in Student Performance, Continued Areas for Improvement
At its March 28 Board of Education meeting, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) leaders presented mid-year Evidence of Learning (EOL) data focused on grade-level proficiency using multiple measures to determine the success of students, schools and the district.
At least half of students in grades K, 3, 6 and 9 obtained EOL in mathematics, with the highest percentage of this year’s kindergarteners (70.8%) demonstrating EOL attainment and the lowest percentage of sixth graders doing so (48.9%).
2. Spring Break and COVID-19 Testing
As with prior breaks, return testing will not be mandatory for staff and students after spring break. We ask staff and students to consider active symptoms and personal exposure risk, and to test and report positive results before returning to school. The shelf life for test kits has been extended; please check the new expiration dates for iHealth or InteliSwab home test kits. 3. Save the Dates for These April Events
Annual MCPS College Fair
Representatives from more than 300 colleges and universities will be on hand at the annual Montgomery County National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) National College Fair on Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19 at the Maryland Soccerplex18031 Central Park Circle in Boyds.
Youth Climate Summit
Montgomery County Public Schools is hosting the 2nd Annual Youth Climate Summit at Tilden Middle School on Saturday, April 22. The student-led event will educate MCPS students about climate change and equip them with tools to create climate action projects to bring back to their communities.

Special Education Parent Community Resource Fair
The first Special Education Parent Community Resource Fair will be on Saturday, April 29 at Gaithersburg High School. The resource fair will be held from 9 a.m.–noon, and will include a guest speaker, valuable community resources and vendors, and fun children’s activities, including a moon bounce, crafts and face painting.
Gaithersburg High School is located at 101 Education Blvd. in Gaithersburg.
4. Register as a Summer RISE Host Today!
MCPS is seeking hosts for the Summer RISE 2023 program in all career fields, particularly in arts and entertainment, architecture, bioscience, business management, cybersecurity, engineering, healthcare, information technology, law and veterinary services. Summer RISE is an MCPS initiative to help students learn about career opportunities. If you are interested in offering an in-person, virtual or hybrid experience at your workplace between June 26 and July 28, sign up today. Registration will close Friday, April 14. 5. Bright Spots This Week
MCPS Moment: Business Pitch Challenge
Young entrepreneurs presented their ideas in front of a panel of judges at the annual MCPS Business Pitch Challenge. Students from six high schools participated in the Shark Tank-like competition. Students from Northwood High School won first place with their idea for a financial literacy app.
Student Leaders Elected and Honored at State Student Councils Convention
Forty-eight student leaders participated in the annual Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) annual convention in Ocean City. Two MCPS students were elected as officers and the Wheaton High School Student Government Association was recognized for hosting the February MASC Legislative Session.

REMINDER: Upcoming Art Show
The Northwest High School Art Department welcomes the NWHS community to our Spring Art Show, where artwork from each art student will be exhibited. All students who are currently enrolled in an art class are required to attend one night of the Spring Art Show. The purpose of this event is twofold; first to experience how artists display their finished works in a gallery setting, and secondly to evaluate works of art completed by other art students at Northwest.
The Spring Art Show will be open for viewing to the public Wednesday, April 26th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Thursday, April 27th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Auxiliary gym at Northwest High School. Parking will be available in the Northwest lower lot (stadium parking lot).
Please mark your calendars for this upcoming event as attendance and a completed written evaluation are mandatory. The required assignment at the Art Show will take no longer than thirty (30) minutes to complete. The students will hand in the assignment at a designated hand-in box on the stage. The art show assignment must be stamped by a staff member or National Art Honor Society member for validation prior to handing in completed work.
In the event a student cannot attend, please notify your teacher in advance, and it will be reviewed by the teacher for approval. Emergencies do occur but notification must follow (by the next day) for an illness, etc. If it is known that the student cannot attend this event on either day because of sporting events (not a practice), work related issues, childcare issues, etc. prior notification of at least one week must occur for distribution of the alternate assignment which will be due by May 5th. An alternate assignment must be completed by May 5th. The alternate assignment will be a written research based project, which will be determined by the Northwest High School Art Department.
The Northwest High School Art Department looks forward to seeing you at the Art Show; students will be awarded ribbons, in various categories. Please bring friends and family to view the achievements of all our artistic and gifted students at Northwest High School.
REMINDER: Northwest Prom 2023
Northwest High School invites Juniors and Seniors to attend this year's Behind the Mask, A Masquerade Prom on Friday, April 28, 2023, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Gaithersburg. After Prom will be held at Northwest High School. The ticket price includes entrance into After Prom. You do not need a separate ticket to attend after prom. Your name will be on a list when you check in.
- Ticket sales for Northwest High School students will be sold online only through SchoolCash Online.
- Once purchased, NWHS students can pick up their ticket during lunch or after school on 4/20, 4/25, and 4/26, outside of the Business Office, Room 322. In order to pick up your ticket, all obligations must be cleared, including all current AP exam fees.
- Ticket prices will increase to $90.00 beginning April 22nd.
- Northwest High School students are permitted to bring one MCPS student guest to this event. Each guest must complete a Guest Approval Form and have the form signed by parents/guardians and their school administrator. This form can be picked up in the Main Office and must be signed prior to submitting payment for the event. Guest tickets can be purchased by cash or check (made payable to Northwest High School) on 4/20, 4/25, or 4/26.
- Tickets are non-refundable.
Prom Rules:
-Must have school ID and ticket to enter.
-Students must remain in designated area of event.
-No re-admittance.
-Selling or swapping tickets is prohibited.
-Respectful and appropriate behavior expected at all times.
-Unacceptable behavior will result in removal from dance.
SCO Registration Information:
The SchoolCash Online (SCO) site which can be found here, and you will need to register for an account if you have not already done so. Once you registered, it will ask for you to add a student to the account. For this, you will need the SCO PIN number (this is not the student ID). This was something that was sent to parent/guardians email addresses on file with MCPS in early August and then again in early September, and came from SCOPINPROCESS@mcpsmd.org. If you cannot locate this PIN, please email Mrs. Jacqueline Miller, financial specialist, at Jacqueline_N_Miller@mcpsmd.org. Please include your student’s name and ID in the email.
REMINDER: Northwest After Prom Party: 4.28-4.29
Northwest will once again host an all-night after prom party on 4.28.23 to keep our kids safe, off the roads, and away from negative forms of entertainment on prom night! This incredible event includes food, games, DJ, entertainment, activities, tons of prizes and giveaways, and more!
We need to raise a significant amount of money and are in need of many volunteers to make this event successful!
It’s important for ALL grade levels to contribute in some way as these juniors and seniors are your children’s classmates, teammates, neighbors, and friends. Any amount appreciated. Suggested donation is $23 for 'the 23 After Prom Party.

REMINDER: AP African American Studies!
Next year, Northwest will pilot the new AP African American Studies course. We are one of only three MCPS schools that will offer the course. If your student would like to attend a brief information session about the course, or sign up to take the course please complete this google form. REMINDER: Free Store Update!
Thank you Northwest Community for all of your donations to the Free Store! We average several visitors a day, and as the new semester begins, students are looking for replacement school supplies for those that have worn out. As always, we accept all gently used school supplies, such as paper and binders, but right now we are in particular need of pencils, test prep books, and backpacks--especially backpacks. Cute trinkets are always welcome to make shopping at the Free Store an especially fun experience. Please drop off donations in the front office or have your child bring them to room 264. Thank you!

Northwest Class Spirit!
It's a long-standing tradition at Northwest for each grade to wear their assigned CLASS COLOR on Pep Rally days! Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $8: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $5) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
