The Manning Weekly Newsletter
April 17, 2020
Dear Families,
We understand the challenges of online learning for students as they navigate a new learning environment; we appreciate our students’ efforts and yours in adjusting so quickly to our new system. We continue to see quality work and deep thinking from our students in keeping with Manning’s tradition of excellence.
The purpose of this letter is to clarify Manning’s response to the Jeffco Daily Briefing message about a shift in grading policies during remote learning. Both Jeffco’s and Manning’s policies are steeped with ambiguity, as we are living through ambiguous times. The simplest and clearest advice I can give is this: The best things for Manning students to do to earn the grade they want is to continue to engage daily in learning, do the best work they can do on their assignments, and advocate for themselves with their teachers.
The Manning Participation Policy is defined as fulfilling all three of the following requirements:
75% or better attendance and participation
75% or better quality assignment completion (teacher discretion)
Good faith (in communication, effort, and quality)
If a student meets the criteria listed above, their grade can’t go below their Mid-Term grade, it can only go up. You and your student can view their March 13th grade in Infinite Campus. It is labeled “Mid-Term.” Teachers will continue to record grades as usual and will do everything they can to keep their gradebooks up to date. If a student meets the participation criteria, their final grade will either be their Mid-Term grade OR their in progress grade, whichever is higher. Final grades will be posted in Infinite Campus by May 29.
If your student has specific questions about a Midterm grade, current grade, or expectations around participation/engagement, please encourage your student to contact their teachers directly.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please know teachers have been advised to lead with grace, empathy, and understanding during these unprecedented times. We understand that none of us asked for our semester to end this way, and we know each student’s remote learning experience has come with challenges that are not their fault. Continue to reach out to teachers if you have questions, extenuating circumstances that are making online learning extremely challenging, or need to provide more information about your child.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your kids with us. It is our honor to serve them.

Students: Having trouble finishing an assignment? We're here to help!
If you're having trouble getting an assignment completed, here are some additional supports we have in place:
- Reach out to your teacher and let them know you're working on it. They will count you present and work with you on a due date that's manageable.
- Check your emails! The front office staff will email students directly if they've missed something with an offer to help. If you respond to that email, we'll know they're working on school, mark you present, and get you the support you need!

8th Grade Continuation Update
Continuation will begin with an 8th Grade Slideshow. We would love pictures of your 8th grader as babies and toddlers, as middle schoolers, hanging with their friends, playing sports, singing in choir, etc. If you're willing to share them, please put them in THIS DROPBOX!
Also, as we know how important it is to give our incredible 8th graders the chance to say goodbye to one another before they head to high school, we have rescheduled the 8th Grade Picnic at Maple Grove Park to Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 10am. We hope you'll join us!
Look Through The Broken: Haiku Poetry by Word Wonder Classes
A malady hit
People are in a stage of
Stress and confusion.
When the malice strikes
And the freeze from malignant
Times come, malice strikes.
A malady spreads
A malignant curse now thrives
Yet no one stops it.
A malice virus
Spreading continuously
Malignant powers.
It’s an alien
He caused annoyance, dismal
He’s malevolent.
A malady’s here
Malefactors could steal cures
But there is not one.
Malicious Covid
Shuts down schools across the world
Covid is touring.
The world is dying
And the people say they help
But who is helping?
COVID is dismal
It is a bad malady
And is malignant.
