Solar Eclipse-Monday, April 8
We have the unique opportunity to witness the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8. While we will only be able to view a partial eclipse in Fort Collins, this gives our students the opportunity to learn more about this rare event. We have purchased eclipse glasses that meet the safety certification by the International Organizations for Standardization (ISO 12312-2:2015) for all our students. Our classrooms and grade levels will be coordinating together for viewing and teaching activities, so please check with your child’s teacher if you have questions. The time frame for Fort Collins is roughly 11:30-1:50, with the peak at 12:40. Students will take their glasses outside for recess as well. Our priority will be to make sure that students know how to view an eclipse safely with the eclipse glasses and that it is not safe to look at the sun without these special tools. We appreciate your help in conveying that message as well.
If you would like to opt-out your child from viewing the eclipse, please print out the Opt-Out form, complete it, and return to your child’s teacher or the office by Monday, April 8. For more information about the Solar Eclipse, and additional resources, please go to: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/. This site will also have a broadcast of the Total Eclipse.
Thanks for your continued support as we help our students learn more about science!

Long Range Planning Update from Mr. Camp
I want to remind you about the work of PSD and Long Range Planning with the Facilities Planning Steering Committee. The committee is charged with developing 2-3 viable scenarios, with community input, that include districtwide options for school consolidations, boundary revisions, and educational program placement to help address projected declining enrollment and budget constraints districtwide. The committee has already presented draft scenarios and is asking the community for feedback. You can see more details on the proposed scenarios on the Facilities Planning Steering Committee site.
The current implications for Werner are:
Potential boundary changes for our school (Scenario C).
Potential boundary changes for our students for middle school. Currently our students feed into Preston and two of the scenarios (B & C) would have our students feed into Boltz Middle School.
All of the boundary change proposals would have our students feed into Fossil High School.
Possible consolidation of Werner into other schools or other boundary changes. The committee will continue to revise the scenarios and has stated that “the schools that are included in change scenarios today may not be those that would be impacted in the final, adopted changes, and schools that aren’t included today may be included in possible options down the road.”
How can you engage? While the Listening Sessions have concluded, you can give your feedback, on the current proposed scenarios, through an online questionnaire. The closing date for all questionnaires is 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 17. There will also be PSD Board of Education Listening Sessions on April 16 and June 4. For more details, go to the PSD website for Listening and Community Engagement.
Thanks for your continued support and engagement as our district faces some difficult decisions and challenges in the coming months. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards,
Hayden
SAVE THE DATE-State Testing
Our Mathematics (3rd-5th), English Language Arts (3rd-5th), and Science (5th) Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) tests will be held during the month for April. Please try to avoid scheduling events that would cause your child to be out of school during testing sessions. If you want more information regarding CMAS testing including exempting students, please visit PSD Assessment website.
Congratulations to our Battle of the Books!
Congratulations to our teams that made it to the Battle of the Books district competition!

Update 5: Facilities Planning Steering Committee-March 27
To keep our community informed about long-range planning efforts, we will send an update after each meeting of and presentation by the PSD Facilities Planning Steering Committee to the school board.
You can find all committee updates and additional communications on the Long-Range Planning web section. To translate the update into a language other than English, scroll to the top of the web page, click on “Translate / Traducción / 번역 / 翻译 / ترجمة,” and select a language.
Key Takeaways
- Your voice matters, and people are listening.
- Attend a committee listening session - There are listening sessions tonight, March 27 (6-7 p.m. online); Thursday, March 28 (5:30-7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School); and Thursday, April 4 (6-8 p.m. at the Future Ready Center in Foothills mall, for Spanish speakers).
- Fill out a questionnaire - When it's convenient for you, watch the video recording of the committee’s March 19 presentation to the school board and submit feedback through this online questionnaire by 10 a.m. on April 5.
- Attend a board listening session - The Board of Education will host listening sessions April 16 in the Poudre High School auditorium and June 4 in the Fort Collins High School auditorium. Both sessions are scheduled from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
- Members of the committee expressed gratitude and pride for those who have attended listening sessions and shared feedback so far. Thank you to participants for being thoughtful and respectful while engaging in a difficult process.
- The possible options, presented by the committee on March 19, are only a starting place - The intent of the March 19 presentation was to put some options out there to start a conversation. The scenarios will be revised and refined, considering community input and further analysis by the committee.
- The schools that are included in change scenarios today may not be those that would be impacted in the final, adopted changes, and schools that aren’t included today may be included in possible options down the road. This is an uncomfortable and emotional process, and we acknowledge how challenging and uncertain our PSD community feels right now.
- The committee will continue to gather feedback and refine possible options. They are scheduled to give updates on their work at the April 23 Board of Education meeting and to make their final recommendation to the Board at the May 28 Board of Education meeting. Board of Education Directors are scheduled to vote on one of the committee’s recommendations at the June 11 meeting.
- It’s key to communicate clearly as we navigate a complex process together. To help, there is a list of key terms and definitions on the Long-Range Planning Communications web page.
- There are also Frequently Asked Questions. These are being shared at listening sessions, as well.
