What is Cyber-bullying?
Why does the bully do it over the internet?
Cyberbullies are generally a product of their environment where they are verbally or physically abused or, they may be just spoiled rotten and bored enough to make other people's lives miserable. In groups of Cyberbullies they feel they are strong because they are together and feed off each other.
How does it effect people?
It leaves the person feeling very hurt that a person or group would target them and say the things they do for no reason other than being mean. The victim will then probably be afraid to go to school, they will have a drop in grades, they will fear of leaving their home, they will hate going to school, find it difficult to make new friends, a feeling of helplessness, they won't be able to trust anyone, they might go under depression.
How does the victim react to the bully?
Positive Reactions:
· Blocking communication with the cyber bullies.
· Deleting messages
· Talking to others about the cyber bullying
· Reporting the incidents to website moderator or Internet service provider.
Negative Reactions:
Many victims may react negatively to cyber bullying. They feel hurt, angry, scared, or embarrassed and these emotions cause the cyber bully victims to:
· Seek revenge
· Avoid friends as they are scared that the cyber bully is one of them
· Cyber bully back
How can parents protect there child?
· Keep your home computer is a busy area of your house.
· Set up email and chat accounts with your children.
· Make sure that you know their screen names and passwords and that they don't include any personal information in their online profiles.
· Regularly go over their instant messenger "buddy list" with them. Ask who each person is and how your children know him or her.
· Discuss cyber bullying with your children and ask if they have ever experienced it or seen it happen to someone.
· Tell your children that you won't blame them if they are cyber bullied.
