A Message from the Principal
FWE families,
We are getting fully prepared to welcome all our students back to the building soon. Since the fall we have successfully served our preschool, kindergarten, and many students needing specialized supports. We have demonstrated that school can take place in person safely.
Teachers have been busy preparing for the transition to in person learning. We met this week to review the many safety protocols and ensure we are fully prepare to welcome your children back. I want to personally thank our FWE staff for all they are doing to get ready. I also want to thank the FWE families for your continued grace, patience and flexibility through all the ups and downs we've collectively experienced since last March. It is mind boggling to think that a year has passed since many of our students were on campus. We are ready and we can't wait to see your children.
I know many of you may have questions about the safety protocols or how the school/home partnership needs to adapt as we move into a "hybrid" instructional model. I'd like to invite you to a Principal Chat on Zoom this Thursday from 5:15-6:00 p.m. (https://monroe-wednet.zoom.us/my/cortes) I will be available to answer any questions you may have. Hope you can join me.
In partnership,
Kristin Cortes

Safe Return Plan
Main Student Entrance
Students coming to school with completed attestation forms (English/Spanish) can enter directly through this gate beginning at 8:50 a.m. (A group) or 12:50 p.m. (B group). A staff member will be there to collect their form and welcome them to school. Please be sure to take your child's temperature at home and make a note of the temperature reading in the upper righthand corner of the attestation form.
Students will have their temperatures taken again prior to entry and go directly to their classrooms. Also important to note that students will not be allowed to enter campus from the Columbia side near the bus loading zone. We do not have staffing to accommodate health checks there, so all families will need to plan to come to the front of the campus.
Student & Staff Zones
In an effort to provide more space for students to socially distance as they wait for parents during dismissal, we have roped off large sections of our front area. These areas will only be open to students and staff during dismissal. The best way to pick up your child will be to remain in your car and go through our pick up line. Staff will be giving each family a sign to display their child's name and teacher in their front or side window to expedite pick up. All families walking to campus will need to plan to be waiting out in the elements (bring your umbrellas!). We no longer have undercover areas available to families for waiting. You will also notice that the student car loading area will be a passing zone only. For safety reasons, no parents or students will be allowed to stand in this area. All parents must remain at a 6 foot distance from one another as they wait.
Health Check Stations
Students that do not have a completed attestation form (English/Spanish) will need to go through the screening process prior to entry to campus. Parents are asked to accompany their children to these health stations to ensure they pass the screening and can attend school. Screening consists of answering the attestation questions and going through a temperature check. Families arriving via car will have their temperature checked prior to exiting their car.
It is incredibly important that families keep students home if they have any symptoms related to Covid. We want to keep all our staff and students safe. Thank you for being extra vigilant to paying attention to your child's health situation.

Inclement Weather Procedures Reminder
Now that winter is upon us, we wanted to remind you of our inclement weather procedures. Even though it is an unusual school year, we will be upholding our typical inclement weather procedures just as any other school year. This means that if road conditions are deemed unsafe, we will be delaying or canceling school for that day. Canceled school days may need to be made up at the end of the school year. These days are included on our published calendars as "snow make up" days.

February is Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
We would like to send out a special thank you to Lori Clark, Digital Learning Teacher and Junelle Lewis, the Office Manager at Maltby Elementary for putting together this AMAZING video honoring Black History Month!
Attendance
Attendance is taken daily. Please call the office if your child is unable to join their Zoom meetings. If your grade level is learning in person, your child will be marked absent if they do not attend in person instruction.
If you know your child will be absent or unable to complete work, please call our 24 hour attendance hotline at (360) 804-3201 to excuse them.
Make sure your contact information is up-to-date!
It is very important that all families make sure all of their contact information is up-to-date with the school office. In the event of school delays and cancelations, or other emergencies, we need to be able to contact all of our families. When there are urgent messages to share with families, they are sent out via email and phone call. Messages are also posted on the district website, Facebook and Twitter.
If you would like to opt-in to also receive text messages, please send a text message of "Y" or "Yes" to our school's short code number, 67587. You can opt out of these messages any time by simply replying to oue of our messages with "Stop".
