Online Safety Lessons With Your Child
Below are a few examples of lessons that will be taught throughout the school year to introduce your child to Digital Citizenship. Feel free to join in the fun and revist these lessons at home too!

Going Places Safetly
Key Vocabulary: Internet, online, website
Three Rules we have for visiting places online:
- Always ask your parent (or teacher) first.
- Only talk to people you know .
- Stick to places that are just right for you.
At-Home Activity: Ask your child about their virtual field trip to the SanDiego Zoo. Have them share their My Favorite Place handout and encourage them to teach you the rules for staying safe online!
Staying Safe Online
Key Vocabulary: safe, caution, right
Green Light Site: GOOD!
Doesn't let you talk to people you don't know
Yellow Light Site: CAUTION!
One that asks for information such as who you are, where you live, your phone number, etc.
Red Light Site: STOP!
A site you may have gone by accident that is filled with things for older kids or adults.
At-Home activity: With a family member, find three new "green" sites you can visit. Ask your child to explain how these are safe sites that are just right for them.
Keep it Private
Key Vocabulary: private, username or "screen name"
Username Rules:
- Ask a parent or adult before you create a username
- Never include any private information (like my real name, address, etc.)
- Make it something easy to remember - a favorite animal or toy
- With the help of an adult, write it down and keep it in a safe place.
At-Home activity: Ask your student to share the username they created in class and the rules for secure usernames. Allow your child to help you create a safe username! Visit these recommended sites to explore together Secret Builders, Scholastic's The Stacks, LEGO
Rings of Responsibilty
does a good digital citizen have?
Key Vocabulary: responsibility, community, digital citizen
Look at the "Rings of Responsibility" image to observe what we have learned.
At-Home activity: Using paper plates as a canvas create your own Rings of Responsibility as a family for offline and online activities. Use magazines, photographs or even your own drawings! Parents, if you want to Go Digital use an online collage maker like Photovisi or PicMonkey.
Digital Citizenship Pledge
Key Vocabulary: community, expectation,
digital citizen, pledge, motto
Be a good community member online and offline!
- Welcome all members!
- Follow the rules or guidelines of the group/community
- Encourage others to follow the community's guidelines as well.
At-Home Activity
Ask your student to share the Digital Citizenship Pledge he/she created with his/her partner then take time as family to fill out a Family Media Agreement together! A copy has been sent home in your child's weekly folder.
Super Digital Citizen
Key Vocabulary: citizen, digital citizen, responsibility
We are SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, and RESPECTFUL
Super Digital Citizens! Ask your child about the superhero he/she created to help people act safely, responsibly and respectfully online! Create your own superhero
At-Home Activity - Create a comic strip to Save the Day by illustrating a problem in the digital world and how your superhero helps to resolve it that is safe, responsible and respectful! Use the handout from class or visit http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/ to create one. Share it with your ITRT or Library Media Specialist for a special reward!
