HALLOWEEN: PARADE, COSTUMES, & MORE!
This year's parade will begin at 8:45am on the blacktop. Grade levels will take turns parading around the center of the blacktop while playing Halloween tunes.
We will have designated locations for parents to view the parade (see above). Please note that the "Spectator Sections" near 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade will be outside the fence on the grass. Please have students wear their costumes to school. Please also have your child bring a change of clothes, so students can change after the parade.
Costumes that portray a character in children's books or videos are always encouraged. Please take into consideration when planning costumes that the costume should be appropriate to the school setting. We will continue to follow basic school and district rules regarding NO toy guns, knives, crop tops, no roller skates/blades, no blood or scary masks, and no radios/tape recorders. Please do not have these items as part of the costumes. NO clown costumes.

LCAP PARENT REPRESENTATIVE
It is time again to put forth the name of a parent leader who is willing to represent Altamont Creek and serve on the District LCAP Advisory Committee. The advisory committee must include parents or guardians of students in our schools and we need to make sure we have representation of parents of the following: English Learners, students who receive free or reduced price meals and foster/homeless children. We also want this parent advisory group to include parent(s) of special education student(s) and parents representing our numerically significant student ethnic groups including African American and Hispanic/Latino as well as our other ethnic groups.
Please email Andrea Tapia at atapia@lvjusd.org if you are interested.

Diwali
What Is Diwali?
Diwali (also called Divali or Deepavali) is a “festival of lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. The name comes from Sanksrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” On the night of Diwali, celebrants light dozens of candles and clay lamps (called diyas), placing them throughout their homes and in the streets to light up the dark night.
In most of India, Diwali consists of a five-day celebration that peaks on the third day with the main celebration of Diwali. In other places where Diwali occurs, usually only the main day is celebrated.
FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
Filipino American History Month is celebrated in the United States during the month of October. The Filipino American National Historical Society established Filipino American History Month in the year 1988. In California (and in Hawaii), where a large number of Filipino Americans reside, Filipino American History Month is widely celebrated.
A pivotal year was 2006, which marked the centennial celebration of Filipino migration to the United States. In California, Filipino American History Month was first recognized statewide in 2006, when the California Department of Education placed it on its celebrations calendar.
On September 9, 2009, the California State Assembly voted to “designate the month of October 2009, and every October thereafter, as Filipino American History Month.” The bill was introduced by former Senator Leland Yee with Senators Carol Liu, Pat Wiggins (now deceased) and Lois Wolk as co-authors.
There are now about four million Filipino Americans in the United States, approximately 1.5% of the country’s population. They speak a wide array of Philippine languages such as Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, and Kapampangan, among many others.
