What is Skin Cancer?
Ten Facts about Skin Cancer:
1 Each time you get a blistering sunburn, it damages skin cells and increasing your risk of getting skin cancer.
2. Skin cancer is the most common cancer and 75% off all cancer diagnoses are skin cancer.
3. If you have fair skin, especially with freckles, sunburn easily, or become painful in the sun are at a greater risk of getting skin cancer.
4. If you get a severe sunburn early in life or a burn unrelated to the sun, you can eventually get skin cancer.
5. There are 3 major types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma.
6. The symptoms of BBC are a bump on the sun-exposed skin that looks raised, smooth, and pearly.
7. The SCC symptoms are a well-defined, red, scaling, thickened bump on the sun-exposed skin. It might start to bleed and if it is untreated, it may develop into a large mass.
8. A symptom of melanoma is a change is size, shape, and color of a mole.
9. BCC and SCC are more common with older people, but melanoma occurs with people in the ages of 25-29.
10. A way to figure out the you have skin cancer is a biopsy. This will be taken from the suspicious area of the skin.
Five ways to prevent Skin Cancer:
1. If you have skin cancer, make sure talk to your doctor about getting surgery.
2. Make sure your sunscreen has a SPF of 15 or higher and make sure to reapply it if you think you sweat it off.
3. Avoid tanning booths, they are a way to get the cancer.
4. Limit the sun exposures. Try to avoid the sun's intense rays between 10 a.m and 2 p.m.
5. If you are likely to get sun burn wear long-sleeves, pants and a wide-brimmed hat.
