Mentor at IDEA
Plug In & (em)Power Tomorrow's Innovators
At the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA), we know that young adults who excel after high school embrace new challenges, recover quickly from difficulties, and demonstrate a capacity for understanding other’s experiences.
While our teachers work to ensure that students master content at the level and pace that works best for them, we are looking for mentors who can coach students to become articulate communicators, self-directed learners, and professional collaborators.
Mentor Program At a Glance
We are looking for mentors whose interests and backgrounds are as diverse as our students.
As a mentor, you commit to:
- spending 2 hours/month connecting with a student (30 minutes in person at IDEA)
- helping a student set and reflect on academic and personal goals
- coaching a student's Next Generation Skills
- sharing insight into your background and professional experience
Here are a few other items we're looking for. Mentors who are:
- 21 years or older
- Responsive to phone &/or email
- Caring and tolerant towards difference
- Effective communicators and leaders
As a mentor at IDEA, you will receive:
- Volunteer orientation and mentor training
- Materials to help you coach students to become internship-ready Articulate Communicators, Self-Directed Learners, and Professional Collaborators
- On-going support
As an IDEA mentor, you are both a cheerleader and a coach who helps a student develop the self-efficacy he or she needs to become an agent of change in their own lives and in their communities.
