The Grizzly Growl
December Edition
PRINCIPAL'S LETTER
December 2022
Dear Grassfield High School Families,
We hope you had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and are ready for the holiday season. We are all thankful and appreciative of our Grassfield HS Faculty, Staff, students, and parents.
The 16th year of Grassfield High School has been exciting and memorable thus far because of our student engagement, service, and efforts in the classroom and beyond. So far this year we have won a Boys Cross Country Region Championship, won many awards during Marching Grizzly and Color Guard season, earned a state tournament berth in Girls Volleyball, have a CPS Teacher of the Year Finalist (Mrs. ReDavid), and earned a W!SE Platinum Schools Award (Top 30 in the nation) for our incredible student performance on the W!SE Financial Literacy Test. We are certainly proud of all of these accomplishments and more, and look forward to seeing what else our students and staff will accomplish.
Our faculty, staff, and administration remain committed to continuing our tradition of academic excellence and school success. Our staff will continue our focus on building positive relationships to inspire, engage, and empower ALL of our students through the Grizzly Way with the end goal being graduates who are ready for EMPLOYMENT, ENLISTMENT or ENROLLMENT.
Please review the information enclosed for important information that will provide relevant information for both parents and students. Also, please refer to our website and our social media sites on Twitter and Instagram for the latest information and events. One area we need your help with is student tardiness to school in the morning. Please be reminded that school begins at 8:55am and students must be inside the school AND their assigned classrooms by 8:55am. It generally takes students 5 minutes to travel from the front doors to the classroom so please keep this in mind when dropping students off. To be on time by 8:55am, students must be in class.
Grassfield HS wishes you all a very happy holiday season. Thank you for your support, and as always, Go Grizzlies!
Proud To Be a Grizzly,
Mike Perez

Important: Attendance Waiver Process
If you have missed more than 9 days in any semester long class, for any reason, you will need to complete the Attendance Waiver Request Form (also posted to GFH Website). There is no longer a time recovery (extended day) program. This change in time recovery aligns to a VDOE policy from 2016 and a CPS School Board Policy passed in January 2022. There are three types of extenuating circumstances that would allow the student to receive the grade earned in spite of excessive absences: family circumstance, medical circumstance, or a transferring student from another district. Documentation must be provided and will vary based on circumstance and family, but hospitalization is not the only qualifying circumstance. Similar to other districts in the state, this policy places focus on the learning and mastery; whereas time recovery was a matter of logging or making up hours. Timelines are detailed within the form.

From the Nurse's Desk
Attention Junior Parents,
MEN ACYW-meningococcal vaccination is required for 12th grade entry. One dose at age 16 or older should be provided by the parent to the school nurse, in order for your child to attend their senior year. We are asking that you share a record of this documentation with your school nurse, as soon as your child has received this vaccination. If your child received this vaccination prior to the age of 16, they will need a second dose after the age of 16, which must be turned in. This is a Virginia state regulation that we must abide by. Your understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated by your school nurse. You may contact the clinic with any questions
Thank you,
Grassfield High School Nurse
