St Benedict's Cross-Country Team enjoyed a nice day out in the sun on Monday 26 April. Competition against the top runners in the DIO was fierce. Overall, there were a number of impressive performances. Most notably, the school had 2 students finish with a place - Gabrielle V, 3rd place (12 Boys) and Jude H, 3rd place (13 Boys). The success didn't stop there! with Emily D (12 Girls), Lincoln J (14 Boys), and Connor P (16 Boys) also qualifying to run at the next level.

YEAR 9 REFLECTION DAY
Our Year 9's were very lucky to spend the day with Chris Doyle from Karis Ministries. He focused on the themes of FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE and giving the world your best.
Through music, storytelling, and humour Chris had our Year 9s captivated with information around Hope and not despair, Light and not darkness, Joy and not sadness. The reflection day gave students the opportunity to step back from their everyday life and reflect on their relationship with themselves and others.
I thank Year 9 for the way that they actively participated in all aspects of the day, and the staff who supported them.

CHESS NEWS
St Benedict's have entered the Sydney Metropolitan Secondary Schools Chess Competition for the first time. We are proud to be fielding team in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior categories. We are competing in the South West region and will journey to other schools in the region to engage in the tournament. The first games were last Friday against Macquarie Fields for our Junior and Intermediate teams. We ultimately walked away with losses, but the students are keen to play their next opponents. The atmosphere was intense, with clocks being used in a real tournament-style setting! We would like to thank Mr McAteer for giving up his time on a Friday afternoon to drive us to the venue.
Some of the team engaged in a training session on Wednesday afternoon where they attempted some Chess puzzles (trying to checkmate the King with only a King and a Rook), and they played an "annotated game" where their moves and thinking processes were constantly questioned and improved, and where they also had the chance to listen to their opponents moves and the reasons why he was moving his pieces as he did. We thank Mr. G. Diggins from the Sydney Metropolitan Secondary Schools Chess Committee for giving up his time to assist our development.
As a result of increased interest, Chess Club will be starting during select breaks at St Benedict's, with the aim to host an in-school Chess Tournament next term. Experienced and beginner players welcome - please see Miss Kelleher to register interest or to learn how to play.

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge has commenced for 2021 and is open to students from Year 7 to 9 (with special dispensation for students in Year 10 who have completed the challenge every previous year and were unable to do so in 2020).
The aim is to encourage a love of reading and the challenge is to read 20 books - 15 from the PRC List and 5 personal choice books between March 2021 and 20th August 2021.
It’s easier than you think - you can count books you have read since September 2020 when last year’s challenge ended.
Our Library has a great display of PRC Books and you can add some books you’ve already read at home.
Take the Challenge! See the Library Staff to sign up and find out more details.
Happy Reading
