A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
It is exciting to see the enthusiasm around Earth Day at our school! From beautiful Earth Day chalk art on the playground to thoughtful writing about how a kid can help the world, our students are marking this day in wonderful ways. I wanted to share part of a great article about Earth Day below, including some very cool facts that you may or may not yet know.
“April 22 is Earth Day, a day where humans everywhere take a minute to be grateful for this planet and the amazing natural resources we've benefited from thus far. It's also a day where we do our best to make sure future generations can continue to enjoy those resources. Maybe you'll unplug the TV, take a bike to work, plant a tree, make more of an effort recycling.
However you choose to honor it, Earth Day is a great way to jumpstart a lifetime of taking better care of our planet. While you're celebrating Earth Day (or making plans for the eco-conscious day), take a minute to read our favorite Earth Day facts.” (https://www.realsimple.com/holidays-entertaining/earth-day-facts)

Spring Allergies
As more spring-like weather continues to creep in, we are seeing a rise in allergy-like symptoms, such as runny noses and sore throats. Per our Covid Health Screening protocols, these symptoms require a student to be kept at home. If your child has known allergies, we encourage you to reach out to their doctor for a note explaining the symptoms and stating they are due to allergies. With a note like this we are able to keep your child at school if the symptoms we see match the doctor’s note. Thanks!

EMPATHY
Often referred to as “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes”,
empathy is the ability to understand how another person feels. It is
Seeing with the eyes of another
Listening with the ears of another
Feeling with the heart of another.
Empathy builds stronger relationships, creates a caring community, encourages acceptance of others and promotes good mental health. Here is a link to Sesame Street explains empathy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_1Rt1R4xbM

A Note from the Library.......
Book Fair is officially here starting the 26th thru the 30th!
This year’s book fair will be a hybrid model. You and your child will be able to view a google form with all of the books available at the book fair. When you fill out the order form it will be emailed directly to me. The books will be delivered directly to your child on-site. This will allow us to offer more choices to our students, avoid the shipping fees and keep our students safe. All profits go directly back to our library. When ordering please set up an e-wallet thru Scholastic, or send a check for the exact amount made out to Chain Lake PTA. Payment must be received before books are delivered.

Digital Learning
Breakout EDU
This week we have a virtual breakout room. Students have to solve puzzles using critical thinking skills. Some of the puzzles can be quite challenging. I encourage students to keep persevering, using the hints located in the lesson if needed. Involving other family members if also perfectly acceptable. I have included a video on some strategies for the last puzzle we had in DL.
Digital Citizenship
Please continue to remind your student to ensure they are practicing good digital citizenship while they are online. Students should be careful about using Google search and ensure that they are following our district policies - searches that could contain questionable content are flagged and sent to individual schools for investigation.
Digital Learning Award
Each week one class is awarded the Digital Awesomeness Award for outstanding participation. Thank you to all the students who participated in the STEM activity before break and shared their pictures and videos of their forts! This week Mrs. Plesa’s class received the award - congratulations!
Office Hours
Office Hours are not during the scheduled time for Digital Learning, which is Friday at 12:30-1:10. Look for the link in the DL lesson for that day.
Keep Calm and Code On!

Health Room Screening for Students
We wanted to inform you of the illness guidelines our Health Room Staff is following to screen children for COVID-19. We have provided the flow sheet of this screening for your review and reference. If children with illness symptoms arrive at school, parents will be contacted to pick their child up. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to work with us to keep children and staff healthy and safe.
The district is following guidelines for COVID Screening from the Snohomish Health District. If a child has one or more of the symptoms listed, they will go to a separate room with a health room staff member while the parent is being contacted to pick the child up. Please make sure you have provided a local emergency contact person and phone number in the event we cannot reach you. We will wait 30 minutes before calling the emergency contact.
Please review the Screening Tool linked above, paying close attention to the box in the lower right corner which explains when the child can return to school. Please note that if your child does not get a COVID test, they will need to wait 10 days from the time the symptom(s) started and at least 24 hours after a fever has resolved before they can return. The Snohomish Health District has informed us that they provide COVID testing if you cannot get one from your local medical provider.
We are working to ensure that all children at Chain Lake stay healthy and safe! Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
The public health recommendation is that children receive a flu vaccine this season as an extra protection to their immune status!
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

CARES
At Chain Lake, each and every one of us is a Cheetah who CARES (Cooperative, Accountable, Respectful, Enthusiastic, Safe)! In school, we talk about what each of these ideas looks like in different settings. As we come back to the building, we know that some of our CARES expectations have changed. We encourage you to use the below as a guide to what it means to follow our Chain Lake expectations in hybrid learning (click the picture to enlarge).
