Curriculum News
For our Curriculum Day in January we were able to work on a few different topics during the day. We started the morning previewing our new book study with the entire staff. With a grant that Brianna Edington was awarded we were able to bring in Dr. Eric Hartwig to explain the different categories of the BEST Screener that we are using in grades Kindergarten and First this year. Dr. Hartwig was able to walk us through the program and guide us to interventions that we can use here at Flambeau to make all students more successful. The high school staff was able to plan for the ACT Test in February along with planning how we could use the resource time to help prep the juniors for taking the test. The rest of the time was focused on inputting information into the BYOC program. We have a few classes that have been submitted to be published and looking forward to adding more by our next meeting. We also had a few retired teachers that served our potluck lunch to our current staff that day, which was very much appreciated!
I am proud of all the students, staff, and community members that made the Cancer Relief Benefit so successful again this year. From students participating in the dress up days, buying links for the paper chain, creating doors with powerful messages, and listening to the guest speakers during the assembly, it shows the character of our school.
I am also looking forward to the 28th year of Jump Rope for Heart here at Flambeau on February 13th. This is another event that demonstrates the character of our community with the students in the elementary raising over $3,500 a year for the American Heart Association.

February is National Cancer Prevention Month with World Cancer Day being recognized on Feb. 4, 2018. For the eleventh year running the School District of Flambeau has taken advantage of this time to do our part in assisting cancer victims by supporting the Women With Courage Foundation and Joshua’s Camp through the School District of Flambeau’s Cancer Benefit. Both of these organizations offer support to women and children with cancer, and their families.
Each of us has been touched by cancer in one form or another. Some closer than others and with many different outcomes. The one thing I can say for certain is cancer is non discriminatory and can strike at any age no matter of gender, political preference, or religious affiliation and when it does happen it is scary no matter how early they catch it, how reassuring medical staff are, or how tough you think you are.
Many local businesses, individuals, and organizations have donated to make this benefit possible, but it is remarkable the time and effort put into this benefit by our very own students. Students held a competition to design this years’ t-shirts and all of the entries were fantastic. Students have been selling bracelets, t-shirts, and organizing other events to raise money in the week leading up to the benefit. Classes have been making products for donation such as a bookshelf, bench, pies, and blankets, but even more remarkable are the students or small groups that have taken projects on by themselves. A couple of young men in the welding shop have made a decorative water fountain that is just amazing. I know it will be one of the most relished items at the benefit. A couple of young ladies are making woven bracelets with all proceeds going directly to the benefit. Other individuals crafted items such as welding projects, wooden signs, and home decor. Our girls basketball team has organized a collection campaign that if all goes well, will end with their coaches getting face paint before the game on the night of the benefit. There are many more students and items not mentioned the deserve credit as well.
We also had two of our high school girls travel to Eau Claire to share our story with WEAU and WQOW on Jan. 30, 2018. See the interviews on the Flambeau Facebook Page.
Being my first year here it has been amazing to be a part of this event. The staff and students are creative, dedicated, and resilient. They have worked together to come up with ideas to make this benefit successful. They have organized, communicated, and went to work to be sure the foundation is set before the benefit. They have pushed through setbacks, stayed flexible, and continued on when faced with obstacles because they believe in their cause and failure is not an option. Kudos to all of you.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the students and staff who dedicated their time to the cancer benefit committee this year. Those included are: Stefanie Harris, Pam Griesbach, Chastity Ridout, Crystal Poznikowich, Craig Cahoon, Sophie Hauser, Shyla Applebee, Abby Bratanich, Sadie Groothousen, and Katie Zimmer. Stefanie Harris has taken the reigns in leading this committee and she has done a fabulous job! On behalf of the district, we appreciate the effort that has been put into leading this year’s benefit. Behind the scenes, there is a lot of extra time put in, and your skills and talents are inspiring!
Joshua’s Camp, based out of Eau Claire, is one of the organizations that Flambeau chooses to make a donation to each year. Joshua’s Camp is the realization and celebration of a wish Joshua Holm made before he lost his battle with cancer in 2008. Joshua’s wish was to start a camp for families who have a child being treated for cancer. The money raised at our cancer benefit and passed on to Joshua’s Camp is used to give families an opportunity to bond over their experiences, but also enjoy time without having to worry about the burden that cancer puts on their family.
“A family going through the everyday ordeal of cancer treatment needs a place where everyone can smile, laugh, have fun and remember what it’s like to really be a family again.” ~Joshua Holm
The Women With Courage foundation is the second recipient of funds raised through our annual cancer benefit. The mission of Women With Courage is being aware of emotional, spiritual, physical and financial burdens of individuals coping with cancer. With that in mind, the Women With Courage Foundation offers a stipend to Rusk County residents currently undergoing cancer treatments. With Flambeau’s help, this foundation has been able to distribute yearly stipends to cancer patients of all ages from Rusk County who are undergoing treatment for cancer. This year, Amanda Shimko, WWCF Board Member, spoke at our morning assembly. I’d like to thank her for taking the time to tell her story and help us learn more about WWCF!
Again, I would like to thank you all for your hard work and dedication to this district event. I am proud to be a falcon any day of the week and seeing everybody’s participation in activities throughout this week puts the icing on the cake. We have a spectacular student body and there is much to be proud of!

With Valentine’s Day coming up quick I thought a decadent sounding dessert was in order. This is a recipe from one of our paraprofessionals, Roberta Sieg.
Chocolate Caramel Pecan Cheesecake
Crust
2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs
6 Tbs. margarine, melted
Filling
1 (14 oz.) bag caramels
1 (15 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 cup chopped pecans, toasted
2 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
½ cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
½ cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces, melted
In a 1 ½ quart heavy saucepan, melt caramels with milk over low heat, stirring frequently, until smooth. Pour over crust. Top with pecans. Combine cream cheese, sugar and vanilla, mixing until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Blend in chocolate, pour over pecans. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes. Loosen cake from rim of pan; cool before removing rim of pan. Chill. Garnish with whipped cream and additional finely chopped pecans, if desired.
That sounds fairly easy to make but absolutely delicious! I can’t wait to give it a try.
Next week, on February 9th, we are trying out some flatbread pizza ideas. We will be having a Chicken, Bacon, Ranch with Spinach Pizza and a BBQ Chicken Pizza. We hope the students find them as yummy as we did.
Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!
