Kia Ora e te whānau
What a spectacular term 1 we are having. It was super special to welcome our new students, staff and whānau into our Chelsea School Community on Friday. Miss Hedges and Mrs Miller did a fantastic job with the karanga and our Kapa Haka group sang beautifully. We hope that you felt the aroha and manākitanga and that you feel a true part of our community. We are so excited that you chose Chelsea School - it is a pretty special place because of the wonderful people like you.
On Friday it was also awesome to kick off Frosty Friday’s thanks to our PTA and student council. Lots of whānau and students were busy enjoying their ice blocks and we truly appreciate the support that you show to the PTA.
I have really enjoyed meeting lots of you but I know that we have barely even touched the surface and that there are lots of whānau still to meet. I strive to be out and about during drop off and pick up times so please if you see me don’t be shy - I would love to connect with you all.
Chelsea Values + DNA
For those families who are new to our school or others who would like a refresh, our values and DNA underpin everything we do at Chelsea. Our vision is ‘Growing Great Learners - Te Whakatipu Akonga Miharo’
DNA
Our DNA are skills and qualities that ‘Grow Great Learners’.
Collaborative: Pīni honi (bees) may be in different hives, but they pollinate and work together.
Up for a Challenge: Tuna (eel) are legendary climbers and have made their way well inland in most river systems, even those with natural barriers.
Communicator: Tui can produce a range of sounds and can even mimic human speech, thanks to their superior control over their voicebox!
Curious: Moko kākāriki (green gecko) are generally curious, active creatures who like to explore.
Structured Literacy News
This year we are working with a consultant from Liz Kane Literacy to develop our knowledge and practice of the various aspects of Structured Literacy. We spent one of our TODs before school started looking into the research behind this shift in practice and the components of the various lessons. This week we observed lessons for The Code (our spelling program) and LLLL (our reading program) being modelled throughout the year groups.
A reminder that we are running an information session for parents on 15th March. Please see Hero for details if you are interested.
School Crossings
Keeping our learners safe is our number one priority. Our school crossings are now up and running. Please encourage your children to use the school crossings and we ask that you do the same.
Our amazing year 6 road patrollers have been trained to safely cross people across our two school crossings. Please wait for the command “cross now” before crossing on the pedestrian crossing.
We also ask that you take care when driving down Chelsea View Drive and Onetunga Road. Please obey the speed limits and be mindful when approaching crossings. A reminder- there is NO turning right when exiting the drop off area. Please exit the car park by turning left only. Turning left creates an unnecessary risk. Please also do not perform U-turns outside of the school zone.
Please only park in designated parking spaces. It is vital that all emergency access points are kept free and cars are not parked on yellow lines.
Team Updates
Kākano
The last few weeks have seen Kākano getting stuck into school life. We welcomed all our new friends and whānau to our school with a Powhiri. Thank you to those of you who joined us, we are so excited to welcome you to our school and we look forward to getting to know you all.
Last week (week 3) we had a special visit from the Royal New Zealand Ballet. We had the opportunity to learn some ballet moves, bending, jumping and leaping. We also took a closer look at the special point shoes the dancers use to walk on their toes!
This week it was our turn to give softball a go! Some lovely coaches from North Harbour softball came into school and taught us how to throw and catch a softball! We also learnt about the bases, and had a turn at running around the whole pitch!
We've noticed a few pencil cases coming in with stationery. In Year 1, stationery items are used as class sets as we don't have individual tote trays for our belongings. If your child has brought in their own pencil case, this will be popped into their book bag to use for home learning if they'd like to.
Pakiaka
What an action-packed two weeks we have had! Pakiaka enjoyed the opportunity to have different workshops, including ballet and softball. It was awesome seeing our learners being up for a challenge and supporting each other to give these new skills a go.
A highlight has been sharing our “All About Me” bags in our hubs, where we ask learners to talk about the things that are important to them and make them unique. This links to our school's value of whanaungatanga and is a great way to get to know each other. Keep an eye out for these coming home in staggered groups over the rest of the term.
Rito
It’s been all systems go within our hubs! Our swimming is well underway with our Year 4s working on developing their stamina and fitness for the Swim Sports at Northcote College on 15th March. We will be hosting our own Year 3 Swim Sports on 21st March in our school pool. Parents are welcome to come along and support both these events. Next week many of our learners will be doing various PAT Assessments. We will be speaking to our hubs about how these assessments are to help guide our teaching and will emphasise the importance of them giving it their best shot. If you have anxious children around this, please reinforce this message and let us know so that we can help ensure they are settled and feeling at ease. A letter went home about our upcoming theatre trip in April,. If it has not made its way to you, please find it on Hero. Payment may be done on Kindo or at the office.
Unsupervised Children - After School
We have been noticing that there have been an increasing number of students who are hanging around after school unsupervised. It is really important that we keep high levels of health and safety and unfortunately children cannot be left unsupervised during this time. Please ensure that your child is collected from school no later than 3.15pm.
At 3.15pm a bell is rung and any children who have not been collected must head straight to the office so that we can ensure they are safe and contact families.
We want you to enjoy our school grounds and you are more than welcome to enjoy them together as a family. If collecting your child from school before 3.15 is difficult we have our wonderful friends at Kelly Club who provide our Before and Afterschool care.
