MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
In the previous newsletter, the topic focused on empathy. In the past weeks, we have been building on empathy and talking with the students about friendships to help them identify what makes someone a friend. Elementary school can be a tricky time period for figuring out who is a friend! Below are some of the main topics of discussion:
Friends have similarities, but also have differences. More importantly, friends accept each other’s differences and don’t try to make someone conform.
Friends treat you the way you want to be treated. Friends can show they care about each other in many different ways.
Include each other. You don’t have to “pretend” to be someone else around them.
There is give and take.
Overall, friendship is positive in nature and should make you feel good.
To further this discussion outside of school, you can ask your child more about friendships to help them sort through the sometimes confusing times of figuring it out! After all, this is a skill they will need to use for the rest of their lives! Here are some questions to get the conversation started:
What do you look for in a friend?
How do you think a friend should treat another friend?
How do you show your friends you care? How do your friends show they care about you?
Sometimes through these conversations, students will decide that someone may not be a friend. Helping them practice and plan these potentially difficult conversations is crucial! I’ve been working with students in recognizing that although they can’t control other people, they can control their words, thoughts and actions. Helping students make a plan using their words, thoughts and actions will also be a lifelong, transferable skill set!
HABIT OF THE MONTH
The Habit of the Month is “Synergize”.
We all know that together is better and definitely more fun. Working in groups helps to create better ideas than what one person can do alone. We have learned that everyone is good at something and that everyone needs to get better at something. We can all learn from each other!
PREPARING FOR 2018-2019
STAFFING UPDATE;
Since our last newsletter, Mrs. Dietrich, kindergarten teacher, announced that she will be retiring at the end of the year. Mrs. Dietrich has served students for 31 years! We thank her for her dedication to the profession and we wish her all the happiness in the world as she leaves the classroom to spend more time with family.
Mrs. Jocelyn MacLaverty announced that she will move from fifth grade to the 4/5 High Ability classroom. Mrs. MacLaverty is looking forward to this change and is working closely with Mrs. Isenbarger to see that the transition goes smoothly for her students next year.
We hope to announce our new hires in our next newsletter. We are so excited about our candidates; however, these applicants are still in the process of officially becoming Hershey Panthers. Stay tuned!
~~~~~
If your child will not be returning to Hershey next school year (or not moving on to East Tipp for 6th grade), please be sure our office is aware. Advance notice allows us to prepare the student's file to send on to the next school.
~~~~~
Reminder from our last issue:
If you wish to provide input for the committee to consider when making your child’s placement, we request that you adhere to the following guidelines:
Provide input in writing. My email address is lfields@tsc.k12,in.us.
Please refrain from asking that your child be assigned to a specific teacher. We are looking for a description of the type of learning environment you feel best suits your child.
Fourth and fifth grade students will be assigned to a home room and then switch classes for language arts and math. Students will be placed in these classes according to their academic and social needs. Students may move in and out of assigned language arts and math classes as individual needs change. It is likely that most students will experience each teacher assigned to the grade level; therefore, no parent input is requested for these grades.
Requests to separate or combine specific students will be considered if a valid reason is provided. Combinations based on friendship do not meet this criterion. A request from both parties wishing for a specific student combination must be submitted in order for it to be considered.
Parent input must be received by April 30 with no exceptions. Committees are slated to begin this process May 1 at 7:45 AM.
