It's important to note that the blue, red, and purple all once belonged to Mexico, making the Spanish Territory the largest land area.
Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny is depicted in John Gast's painting entitled "American Progress." Manifest Destiny is the belief that American's have the god-given right to colonize from ocean to ocean. The people who moved west were mainly trappers and farmers.
Steel Plow
John Deere invented the steel plow 1837. The prairie soil stuck to wood plows, but did not stick to Deere's steel plow. This allowed for larger fields to be developed, increasing productivity, & opening the prairie (Great Plains) to further expansion into present-day states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. These states are now major agricultural states.
Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1794. The cotton gin increased cotton production so that cotton became America's leading crop. This lead to an increase in cotton production & a higher demand for slaves to work the cotton plantations. The cotton gin was a big help to plantation owners and the Southern economy.
