Epithelial tissue
Epithelial Tissue Functions:
- Protection – skin
- Absorption – stomach and intestinal lining
- Filtration and Excretion - kidney
- Secretion – glands
- Sensory perception - if innervated
Epithelial Tissue Characteristics:
- Usually no vascular supply; absorbs nutrients from connective tissue underneath
- Cells are tightly packed together to form protective barrier
- Cells reproduce rapidly
- Innervated by nerves
Connective tissue
Connective Tissue Functions:
- Connects, binds and supports structures
- Protects and cushions organs and tissues
- Extracellular matrix can bear weight, stretch, and take abuse
- Adipose – insulates and stores fat
- Blood - Transports substances
- Bone – provides framework and protection
Connective Tissue Characteristics:
- Made up of matrix of living cells and non-living substance, ground substances
- Matrix is produced by cells and secreted to their exterior, various consistencies
- Good blood supply
- Cells can reproduce

Muscular Tissue
Muscle Tissue Functions:
- Body movement
- Moves blood, food and waste through body's organs
- Synchronous contractions of heart beat
Muscle Tissue Characteristics (3 types):
- Skeletal – large body muscles, voluntary, muscle bundles attach to bones for movement
- Smooth – organ walls and blood vessel walls, involuntary
- Cardiac – heart walls, involuntary
Nervous Tissue
Nervous Tissue Functions:
- Generates and transmits nerve impulses to and from body organs via neurons
- Some cells (neuroglia) support, insulate and protect neurons
Nervous Tissue Characteristics:
- Main component of the nervous system
Which tissue is best for its location and function in the body?
Each tissue plays an important role for the body. I think the Epithelial tissue is really important and its so interesting to see how it works to protect our body. The major function of epithelial tissue includes protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration. The skin is an organ made up of epithelial tissue which protects the body from dirt, dust, bacteria and other microbes that may be harmful. http://www.msnucleus.org/membership/html/k-6/lc/humanbio/4/lchb4_3a.html
