We are Lincoln
Happy Friday!
Every summer I send our staff a letter. I include upcoming dates, beginning of school reminders, and announce the theme for the school year. The theme has always centered around a movie, but this year is different. I am sharing my letter with you because it is about you, your children, and the wonderful culture we have built together.
--------
CSA Lincoln Team,
We are bursting through the barricades and reaching for the sun. We are warriors. Yeah, that’s what we’ve become. Look out’ cause here I come, and I’m marching on to the beat I drum. I’m not scared to be seen. I make no apologies, this is me.
-Keala Settle, This is Me
We are Lincoln.
Lincoln is not just a school.
Lincoln is about rolling up your sleeves and never giving up. It is a stubbornness to do what is best for kids, no matter the cost.
It is looking doubters in the eye, smiling with confidence, and saying, “Bring it on.”
It is knowing that no matter what, someone will have your back.
It is having high expectations. It is daring greatly.
It is loving our students as if they were our own children. It is hope. It is a promise that something amazing will happen.
It is you. It is me. It is the students who show up every day. It is the parents who volunteer and support us.
It is everyone who considers themselves part of the Husky family.
It is a way of life.
I want you to pause and think about that last sentence and the significance it carries. I spent an entire summer trying to disconnect from here, and whether it was through conversations with others in the community or my reflection, I couldn’t escape the reach of this place. I felt like Al Pacino, who played Michael Corleone in the film The Godfather: Part III, when he said, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” I feel an overwhelming sense of pride in what this place means to others. I could go on about the countless stories others shared that impacted me on a very personal level.
Ultimately, I couldn’t wrap this year’s theme around a specific movie. I found inspiration in a myriad of places. Tangible things like songs, movies, tv shows, commercials, letters, quotes, articles, TED talks, and oddly enough, the Jack Reacher book series. But I also kept coming back to conversations, feelings, perceptions of us, and emotions that we have been experiencing over the past few years. I hesitate to say that it is the pulse of the school I am trying to capture, but that’s the best way I can describe it.
We are battle-tested. We are warriors. We beat our own drum. We are ready to take on any challenge that comes our way. We are reaching for the sun. This is embedded in all aspects of what we do and who we are.
Remember that when others spend time with you, they are experiencing what makes Lincoln special. Embrace that incredible privilege. I could not be more proud to have you, representing Lincoln.
-----------
The staff shirt this year is simple. It says, I am Lincoln. This is also why we took first-day photos of your students with the giant picture frame. It is the "who" that defines us. Everything we love about this school happens because everyone associated with the CSA Lincoln family has made it possible. #OnceaHuskyAlwaysaHusky isn't just a hashtag. It is much more than that. It is a commitment to something better for our children. It is knowing that when someone in the community talks with you, they get a glimpse into what makes Lincoln so unique. We all (you, me, our students) carry that incredible privilege. When we say that this will be the best year yet, we mean it. Every child deserves to have an amazing experience at school.
A single movie couldn't encompass this feeling. We are Lincoln. It feels good to say it, right? Like I shared with my team, I am proud to have you as part of our family.
Life is good as a CSA Lincoln Husky. Welcome back to school!
Have a great weekend,
Brett
