Definition
A supercomputer is a computer that performs at or near the currently highest operational rate for computers. A supercomputer is typically used for scientific and engineering applications that must handle very large databases or do a great amount of computation (or both).
Charateristics
high speed
manipulating massive amount of data in a short time
Generally used for scientific calculations.
Used much more power , more heat and more expensive.
Purposes
Supercomputer purpose is to perform high complex processes such as scientific operations or weather forecasts. Used in RESEARCH , ROCKET launching , robotics , etc etc
Examples
Supercomputers are extremely powerful mainframe computers. Examples of supercomputers include Belle, Deep Blue, and Hydra (used for playing chess), GravityPipe (also known as GRAPE) for astrophysics, MDGRAPE-3 for protein structure computation molecular dynamics and Deep Crack for breaking the DES cipher.
