Continuity of Learning Begins Tomorrow
Tomorrow, we embark on a new journey of learning. We recognize that working from home, being a parent, and seeking your support in continuing the education of your child is nearly impossible. Everything we’ve done to date is seeking to connect back to our goal during this shut down of providing enriching learning opportunities for students to continue their learning. This a stressful and traumatic time that we recognize we need to care for not only the academic progress of your child but also their mental and emotional health.
In case you missed them last week, below are the expectations of students and families when learning from home. We shared these lists in the hopes that we’ve erred on the right side of firmness/flexibility and recognize there can never be a ‘one-size’ solution during these trying times.
Early Childhood and Mesnier Primary Expectations
Family Support:
I will notify my school counselor or social worker if I do not have wifi access (Assistance is available.)
I will support my student’s organization of learning by suggesting a quiet space to learn and a checklist of tasks to complete.
When my child’s teacher contacts me, I will respond and help them complete their questionnaire.
I will contact the classroom teacher if I am confused about the lesson/activity.
Gotsch Intermediate, Rogers Middle School and Affton High School Expectations
Student Expectations:
I will check my email and online learning platform (Google Classroom, Schoology, etc.) after 9:00 am.
I will reach out to my peers if I am confused.
I will email my teachers if I am confused.
I will wash my hands and follow any instructions from my parents and the CDC
I will take time to play outside; make art; do something for someone else; read a good book; work on a personal project.
I recognize that all work shared is designed for enrichment and to continue my learning and that NO ASSIGNMENTS will be collected or graded.
Family Support:
I will notify my school counselor or social worker if I do not have wifi access (Assistance is available.)
I will confirm that my student accesses their learning platform after 9:00 am.
I will support my student’s organization of learning by suggesting a quiet space to learn and a checklist of tasks to complete.
When my child’s teacher contacts me, I will respond and help them complete their questionnaire
I will ensure my student contacts the teacher if they are confused with the lesson.
We’ve published two documents (linked above) that outline exactly what we expect of families and recognize there will be varying levels of commitment from day to day and hour to hour based on various conditions. Families, do the best you can and don’t forget to take care of you.
Thanks For Picking Up Your Phone
Thanks so much to each of you who were able to pick up the phone when our teachers and staff members were calling this week. As of 3:15 p.m. today, we made contact for over 2,435 students! (And we only broke our phone system a couple of times with the volume of calls being made!)
If you did not yet receive a call or you missed the call you did receive, don't worry. We'll be following up with anyone we haven't yet spoken with.
We are attempting to assess your family's access, needs, and general well-being. Relationships are embedded in our core values and we want to know how you are doing, ensure our students are able to continue learning, and what support your family may need. Please, please pick up your phone when we call.
Affton Schools Closed Through April 22
While our school buildings are closed, our commitment to our students remains the same. Our teachers, staff, and leaders are working hard to ensure we can continue to provide support for our students and our community.
We have a plan in place that provides learning support to students from home and a meal services plan that provides breakfast and lunch opportunities for students. As always, when you need help or have a question, please call our Affton Schools COVID-19 Helpline at 314-633-5911 or reach out to us at info@afftonschools.net.
Free Meals for Students
Beginning April 6, free school meals will extend to all children ages 1-18 in the Affton community. More details will be shared soon!
We understand that some of our families rely on the availability of school meals for proper nourishment. In order to help with this, Affton School District will be providing "To Go" and delivery meals for all students beginning Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3. At the time of pickup/delivery, a packaged lunch for the day will be provided as well as a breakfast for the following day. Meals will be provided free of cost.
Families can sign up at http://bit.ly/AfftonMeals or by calling the Affton Schools COVID-19 Helpline at 314-633-5911.
