You Can Change How We Look
But Not How We Think
Slave Branding
Slave branding was for the identification or punishment to slaves. A red hot iron was placed upon the bare skin of the slave and the mark was burned onto their flesh. The type of brand and where on the body it was branded depended on the place the slave is at.
Connection
This can be connected to the book Chains because Isabel was branded with the letter I on her cheek as a punishment. She had tried to run away from her Master after she found out her sister had been sold and was caught and branded with I for insolence.
Though Isabel had been branded and punished her mind remained infuriated and rebellious, even more than before she had been she was branded. This shows that though you can change the way a person looks, you can't control the way they feel and think. Even with something permanent.
