When the Lab and the Library Get Together
written by Jennifer Eckert, Science Department
In Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) we spend a lot of time in our classroom investigating science through labs and activities, but another big focus of our class is also exploring careers in the biomedical sciences. This is where Robyn Young comes in to help us get this ongoing research kicked off for the year. At the beginning of each year we bring all PBS classes to the library for a class period with Mrs. Young so she can offer them information about finding reliable resources, avoiding plagiarism and writing citations in the form we require for PBS. This may sound pretty standard, but Robyn has a very interactive lesson for the students, which includes taking some notes, a little acting, watching a crazy video, using their cell phones and playing a game. This is not what would be considered a typical visit to the library to get information.
Robyn and I have been doing this lesson together for several years now and we work together as she teaches the lesson and I help to support the ideas that we need conveyed for PBS. The students use computers during the lesson, but also get to get up and interact with each other. It always seems like we have just enough time to finish the lesson because there is so much information to be learned, but the students leave with a resource sheet that they can use for the year, a better understanding of how to evaluate Internet resources and some links to resources that they know are reliable. It’s a great way to start the year and gives the students and great foundation to be able to research many careers throughout the year.
