Haskin Elementary School
October 2017
Dawn Greenacre, Principal
I hope that you all have had an opportunity to enjoy some of the recent beautiful autumn weather! It is a time to enjoy the spectacular colors, wonderful smells, and great tastes of taffy apples and spiced tea, I love it!
I cannot believe that we are past the half-way point of the first quarter! Where does the time go? The children have been busy in their classrooms and have settled into the routines and expectations of school. They are doing a wonderful job! The smiles, energy, and sounds of learning are what education is all about.
You should have received a progress report from your child’s teacher. They come out midway through each quarter. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. It is important that we work together in order to help your child succeed in school. Also, don’t forget that conferences are November 2nd and 3rd. If you have not already scheduled your conference, teachers should be scheduling them soon.
The Tyler Student Information System is a great way to monitor your child’s attendance, lunch balance, and grades. As a reminder, you can access your student’s information by accessing Tyler Information System’s parent portal. If you need assistance or have questions, please contact the office.
The Breakfast Program has been running very smoothly. As a reminder, any student can come into the cafeteria before school to eat breakfast. The cost varies: Free for those who qualify for free breakfast, $.30 for those who qualify for reduced breakfast and $1.60 for all others. Breakfast menus will be sent out with the lunch menus each month. You can also find them on our website. If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact the office. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it gives your child’s body the fuel they need to learn and grow!
During the month of October, we will be very busy. There will be Fire Prevention/Safety activities, CogAT testing for 1st and 3rd Grades, Red Ribbon week activities at the end of the month, field trips, and so much more! We have no school for students on Friday, October 6th or on Monday, October 9th for Columbus Day. The Halloween parade and parties will be on October 31st!
PLEASE make sure you look at the monthly calendar, as well as notes that come home, to keep informed on all of the activities that happen at school. We want you to be a part of our school community!
Thank you for all of your support!
Arrival and Saying Goodbye to your Student
As students adjust to their morning routine and a new school, sometimes saying goodbye can be hard to do. Reassuring your child that they will see you later and saying goodbye at the door or on the playground will help build their independence and allow them to learn to cope with emotions about separation. To make this transition as smooth as possible, we do not allow parents back to the classrooms. We have lots of adults on hand to help your child navigate the building and start their day. This also helps teachers begin the routines of their day more smoothly with their students.
In addition, please note that we do not have playground supervision in the morning until 7:40. Please do not drop students off or release them from your vehicle until an adult is present. It is important to us that our students are safe.

New Staff at Haskin
My name is Mrs. Craddock and I am the new paraprofessional in the STAR classroom. I live in Millington with my husband and our 4 children. If I look familiar, it's because I was a substitute within the Sandwich district and was a long term substitute for the second half of last year here at Haskin. I have over 13 years of experience in special education and I am very excited to be joining the Haskin family! I am also very proud to be a Sandwich Indian mom!
My name is Marta Dunne, I am the Bilingual Teacher at Haskin and Woodbury School.
I am originally from Mexico City. My husband is Robert Dunne and we have three kids; Ellen (27) who works at a bank, Russell (25) is a youth pastor and Devin (17) is a senior in high school and wants to join the Navy next year. In 2004, a study found that those who could speak two or more languages had higher levels of cognitive brain function and were more adept at solving problems, planning, and other mentally demanding tasks. That is why I encourage all my students to learn a second language and why I became a bilingual teacher!
Speaking a second language has opened a lot of doors for me, and it is a great tool when I travel to other countries.
My goal for the future is to travel around the world with my husband. So far we have been in four continents.
Mrs. Harvey - Teaching Assistant
Hello, Haskin! My name is Jessica Harvey. I have lived in Sandwich for 10 years. I am married and we have 2 girls (3rd and 5th graders). We also have three dogs. This is my third school year with the district. I was a substitute previously and so excited to have become a full time aide at Haskin. In my free time I love taking Zumba classes, crafting with my kids, and hiking. I love working with all of the amazing staff and kids here. I can't wait to see what the rest of this school year brings.
Ms. Raynor - Pre-K Teacher
Mrs. Turus - S.T.A.R. Teacher
Hi! My name is Amy West. I have been with my husband, Jason, for 25 years. We have three boys; Jakob - 20, Adam -13 and Jaret - 12. I love children so much that I ran a daycare/preschool for 12 years. I am so excited to join the Haskin team!
Notes from the Nurse's Office
Medication Reminder
Any student requiring medication during the school day needs to have a completed school medication form on file in the office. This includes all prescription, over the counter, inhalers, and emergency/rescue type medications. Forms can be found on the district website or you may contact the school nurse.
Illness (FEVERS)
Please remember the District policy in regards to fever, as stated in our handbook on page 8, “Fever: Students sent home from school with a fever of 100 degrees or higher may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.”
If a student is sent home by school personnel due to a fever, he or she will not be penalized with an unexcused or excused absence (will not be counted as one of the seven parent excused absences) the following day in order to remain home fever free for 24 hours.
Healthy children learn better!

Lexia Superstars Celebrate Success
Several students practiced their reading skills over the summer by working on the Lexia computer program. Students learned new words and practiced comprehension skills as they completed a variety of fun computer activities. Students who completed a level of Lexia over the summer enjoyed a pizza lunch with reading teachers in the reading room. We congratulate Aiden and Landin Melchi, Chase Friebele, Matthew Owens, and Braiden Wrobel. Good job, boys!
Over 80 Haskin students use the Lexia computer program to practice their reading skills at school each week. Students are encouraged to participate at home as well. If your student uses Lexia at school, and you would like more information regarding home usage, please contact reading teacher, Mrs. Sartori at msartori@sandwich430.org.

Pre-K Family Fun Friday!
Kindergarten Loves Science!
The Kindergarten students are enjoying some science experiments during their STEAM time. So far, they have performed a Skittle science experiment and an apple science experiment. During the Skittle Science experiment, the students found out what would happen if they poured warm water in the middle of a plate lined with Skittles around the edge of it. It made a very cool Skittles rainbow! Then the children were able to paint with Skittle paint. During the apple science experiment the students found out what would happen if they poured vinegar and baking soda into a cored out apple. The reaction caused an apple volcano! The students are also learning about how to be a scientist by using the Scientific Method during their science experiments. What experiment will be next?
Just the Facts, First Grade!
The first grade classes are busy learning their addition and subtraction facts! The have been learning many ways to learn to add and subtract. They learned about double facts (2+2) and doubles plus 1 facts (2+3) and near doubles (2+4). These facts can be memorized or solved by using a number line, counting on or counting down.
The students have also been solving word problems and knowing when to add to solve and when to subtract to solve. Students know key words that let them know like “all together” or “in all” means to add and “how many left?” or “how many more?” means to subtract.
Second Grade really does ROCK!
Mrs. Young and Mrs. Gomes classes learned all about Basalt, Tuff, and Scotia (3 different types of volcanic rocks) in science. In pairs, they made predictions, observations, and brainstormed descriptive words about the rocks. This was the investigation of the experiment....what would happen when the rocks were rubbed together? They discovered some broke apart and made sand!
3rd Grade Gets Wild at the Zoo!
Haskin third graders traveled to the Brookfield Zoo on Thursday, September 21. The students spent the day observing and learning about many of the zoo’s animals, including bears, dolphins, wolves, and giraffes. Thank you to the students and chaperones for a great day!
Buddy Reading
Students in Mrs. Dougherty’s third grade class at Haskin are using buddy reading to read Officer Buckle and Gloria. Buddy reading gives students a chance to read with other students, sharing the story together.
