A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
This week students in grades 3-5 will begin MCA testing. In order to ensure a successful process, we ask for your help in the following ways:
1. Make sure your child's school issued iPad is updated to the newest operating system.
2. Make sure your child's iPad is coming to school fully charged on testing days.
3. Ensure your child gets a good night of sleep prior to any assessment days.
4. Make sure your child eats a good breakfast on the morning of assessment days.
5. Send your child to school with wired headphones that plug into iPads (if you don't have any, they will be issued a pair).
6. Remind your child that any phones, smart watches, or bluetooth headphones are prohibited and their test will be invalidated if they have access to any of them while taking their MCAs.
7. Encourage them to simply do their best. They have learned SO MUCH this school year. They should not feel any nervousness or anxiousness about MCAs. Remind them that you expect them to try their hardest in everything they do while at school and that their teachers do too. Tell them that you are proud of them, that you believe in them, and that no matter how they do on any test or project, you will always love and care for them.
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

Please Help Us Eliminate Distractions Caused By Phones & Smart Watches
We have recently been seeing more and more disruption to our instruction and learning due to phones and smartwatches, especially in the upper grades. Often times it is because students are messaging their parents or family members. We understand parents' desire to stay connected to their child during the school day, but we kindly ask that you do not message your child during the academic day. And we ask that you remind them to wait to message you until the end of the day.
Our school rule is that cell phones should be powered off and remain in lockers from the morning bell to the end of the school day. Most students understand this and follow the rule each day. Smartwatches are a little trickier, however. We currently do allow students to wear them. However, if/when they become a disruption to the learning environment or a distraction to learning for the individual child, we will ask students to take it off and either give it to the teacher for the remainder of the day or return it to their locker for the remainder of the day. Of course, we would rather not have to worry about phones or smartwatches at all, but when they get in the way of learning we are obligated to do so. Thank you for your understanding.
April is Autism Acceptance Month
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. The Autism experience is different for everyone. It is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is often referred to as a “spectrum condition” that affects people differently and to varying degrees.
While there is no known single cause for Autism, it is generally accepted that it is caused by differences in brain structure or genetic factors. Early diagnosis and intervention can greatly support a person with Autism with the resources needed to live fully.
Check out this resource from the Autism Society for more information.
Please Update Your Child's iPad To The Newest Operating System
Keeping your devices updated with the latest version of the operating system is best practice for security. Outdated devices pose vulnerabilities not only to one’s own devices, but to the networks and collective data to which that device has access.
To address security and bug fixes, please update your iPad to iPadOS 17.4 and Mac to macOS 14.4 as soon as possible. It is recommended that you update before or after school hours as it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to more than an hour to download and install. Please plan to do this update as soon as you can when you have a window of time to complete it. [iPadOS: Settings > General > Software Update] • [macOS: System Preferences or System Settings (depending upon version) > General > Software Updates]
Please make sure you have enough storage space and have your device charged to at least 20% or plugged into power for the update.

No Unapproved Signage or Banners on School Grounds
This time of year again we tend to notice various organizations working to advertise for numerous events by placing yard signs or banners near school property. We want to remind all families and community members that we do not allow for placement of advertising materials on our properties. District groups can place signage on our properties, but all others should be run through the Superintendent’s Office and/or designee (typically the activities office at FHS). Any unapproved signs will be removed. Thank you for your understanding.
