SECONDARY ENGLISH CURRICULUM ADOPTION UPDATE
There will be one product adopted for English 6-12 and one for the Honors & AP courses and I will be able to name those products after the board approves them. The materials have some extremely advantageous components for teaching and learning, were highly rated by pilot teaches, and get the highest scores on EdReports. In the uncertain world of SY 2020-2021, know that one bright, positive aspect will be the quality materials you and your students will have. I know that roll out is going to be mucky due to in-person limitations and distribution/access logistics, so I ask for patience during the upcoming months as CCS does its best to deliver products and train teachers on the new materials. Curriculum Maps and Course Descriptions will be updated throughout the summer with the anticipation of having that work completed in August.
SUMMER VIRTUAL TRAININGS FOR SECONDARY ENGLISH ADOPTION: There will be 13 opportunities for teachers to participate in virtual trainings for the adopted materials selected for English 6-12. Teachers only need to attend one of the 13 trainings. Here are the dates: July 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, and 29. These dates with times and access details will be put on PD planner soon so that you may register for the date of your choice. I will let you know as soon as they are on PD planner and I will let you know the training dates for the Honors English and AP adopted materials as soon as I know. Principal trainings for the English 6-12 adopted materials will happen on July 6, 7, and August 4.
SOME ENGLISH 6-12 SPECIFICS: The selected materials for English 6-12 integrate reading, writing, and speaking making it easy to read, write, and discuss daily; offer both thematic and novel-study units, allow for close reading with targeted skill work, have many opportunities for accessing and mastering OST-Style questions and text pairings; build in scaffolds for below, advanced, and EL students; and match adolescent brain research with interactive/inviting access points, visual, auditory, & organizational supports, and opportunities for social academic interactions. They include assessments to prepare for standardized tests (ACT, SAT, OST) and progress monitor. They have the ability to offer course content for African American Literature, Major British Writers Seminar, Humanities, Summer School, and other non-traditional English courses and electives. The materials are both print and digital, which will make for seamless transitions between remote and face-to-face learning.
SOME HONORS AND AP SPECIFICS: The chosen materials for Honors and AP offer spiraled skill vertical alignment from Honors English 9 through AP Lit, allow for mastery of Pre-AP, AP, and Ohio Learning Standards; include deep foundational work through genre and mode in the Honors courses for reading, writing, and working with sources with careful development and constant reinforcement; contain instructional and thematic approaches in the AP courses geared toward training students to read and write at the college level, have both print and digital components; and align to the new test formatting of AP.
SUMMER NEWSLETTERS: Although I do not normally send newsletters over summer break, I wanted to let you know that I may send one or two that deal specifically with the new adoption to help with the transition.
ROY BRISCOE JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP WINNER CHOSEN
On Monday, May 18th, Youssef Hilale was selected as the 2020 recipient of the Roy Briscoe Journalism Scholarship. The Roy Briscoe Journalism Scholarship of $500 is awarded every two years to an outstanding CCS senior who plans to pursue the study of journalism, communications, public relations, or a related field in college. The scholarship was established in memory of news anchor Roy Briscoe by his family and WBNS-TV. Briscoe anchored the 10TV news from 1960-1989. Winning applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; document community service, extracurriculars, work experience, and need; include a portfolio of his/her best work demonstrating excellence in journalism or communications; secure a recommendation from a teacher or advisor; and participate in an interview where he/she presents their portfolio.
--Youssef Hilale is a senior from Briggs High School who attends Fort Hayes and Columbus State Community College. He will major in Mass Media Arts at Clark Atlanta University in the fall. He has been a member of his school's marching band, boys volleyball team, multicultural club, and serves as the Social Chair for Fort Haye's Business Professionals of America chapter where he manages the social media for the group. He is certified in Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop and has produced a promotional video for the Ronald McDonald House, created a short film The Affinity Trilogy, and managed audio, video, and editing for varied public services announcements. While maintaining a GPA of 3.2., he still finds time to volunteer at the United Way's Key Club and help with livestreams and websites for organizations at Fort Hayes.
Columbus City Schools Summer Experience Virtual Summer School
The Columbus City Schools Summer Experience, which is free for CCS students, will take place from June 15th through July 25th. Registration will begin Tuesday, May 26, 2020, via the Parent Portal through Friday, June 5th. Students enrolled in summer school will continue to use the educational platforms Edmentum, iReady, Study Island, and Achieve3000, the platforms currently in use by students as part of our Online Learning Academy. The Online Summer Experience will provide students who need additional support and the opportunity to complete supplemental learning, with the least impact on families, whether catching up with their classmates, recapturing courses they may have struggled with, or working ahead. Information regarding the Summer Experience will be posted to the District webpage at www.ccssummer.org. Online Summer Programming for Elementary and Middle School Students
--K-8 students: Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.
--8th-grade students may take a maximum of two High School courses for credit.
Teachers will post reading, math, science, and social studies assignments daily to Google Classroom and communicate with families to arrange one 45-minute personalized virtual learning session daily with a small group of students. Art, music, and physical education lessons will be embedded into daily lessons to enhance the Summer Experience! Parents will have the opportunity to communicate directly with teachers on Google Classroom or via email throughout the summer.
Summer Programming for High School Students
-- High School students: Monday – Friday, June 15th - July 24th
--All summer offerings will be held via VCAP, our current online platform.
--Except for seniors, students may take no more than two (2) VCAP courses during the summer term.
--8th-grade students may take a maximum of two High School courses for credit.
The CCS Summer Program will offer expanded hours to enable students more flexibility to work on their assignments, take tests, and get the support they need to complete their courses. Students will be assigned to teachers who will be available daily during posted office hours. The following courses will be offered:
· English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12
· Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, AQR
· US History, World History, Global Studies, Government
· Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science
· PE 1 & 2, Health
· Business and Art
· High School Multiple Disability Course
For students served in multiple disability classrooms, summer school will address the Ohio Extended Learning Standards for ELA and Math (K-12). Students and families will log in to Google Classroom to access materials from Unique Learning System as well as teacher-directed enrichment activities. If enrolling in this Summer School option, caregivers should select the course, Multiple Disability Virtual Classroom. Language assistance will be available for families throughout the summer.
The 12th annual NYC MIDNIGHT Flash Fiction Challenge
The 12th Annual Flash Fiction Challenge is kicking off July 10th. It is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create short stories (1,000 words max.) based on genre, location, and object assignments in 48 hours. Each writer will participate in at least 2 writing challenges and as many as 4 depending on how well they place in each challenge. Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission and there are thousands in cash and prizes for the winners. In addition, we will be donating two dollars from each entry to global charities currently dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. ODE Released an ELA Student Readiness Toolkit
The Ohio Department of Education's Curriculum and Assessment Offices have put together an English Language Arts Student Readiness Toolkit to assist teachers, administrators and district personnel in determining when and how material was presented during the 2019-2020 school year. The toolkit contains the English Language Arts Gap Analysis tool, an Excel spreadsheet consisting of all English language arts content standards organized by grade and strand. It also contains passage text sets and passage trackers for grades 3 and up. Teachers can learn more about the assessment process with the Assessment Literacy Tools that are in the toolkit. Items in the toolkit will be periodically updated.

English Leadership Quarterly is excited to announce a two-part Call for Manuscripts. The 2020 April and August editions will concentrate on equity in the language arts classroom. The April issue will focus on curriculum that reaches and represents all learners; in August, the emphasis will move to pedagogy that supports equitable practice in the classroom. THE TEACHERS’ DREAM GRANT
This grant will provide individual grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to Columbus City Schools teachers to assist in improving teaching and learning in CCS. This is an excellent opportunity for interested teachers to acquire resources to support an innovative project to increase student achievement, improve social climate, and/or promote social justice. All applications must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m. on May 29, 2020. This is a district-sponsored grant; applicants will not need to submit a Grant Endorsement Form to apply but will need their principal’s or supervisor’s approval.
NOTE: A CCS email account is required to submit online. To submit your application, go to http://www.columbus.k12.oh.us/dreamgrant and enter your ILead login name and password. NCTE/PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE TEACHER AWARDS

This is the second year that NCTE is partnering with Penguin Random House to offer the Lifelong Readers and the Maya Angelou Teacher Award for Poetry to educators. The submission form is open for 2020. Learn more.
END-OF-YEAR ITEMS
If you want to save any of the older curriculum items aligned to the Pearson adoption from 2009, download and save those this month from the ELA 6-12 Webpage. These will be taken down and replaced this summer. You can find them at your respective grade level quick links: Curriculum/Instructional Resources 6-8 or Curriculum/Instructional Resources 9-12. They are labeled "OLDER COMMON CORE CURRICULUM GUIDES" in each of the grade level sections.
2. END OF YEAR WRITING PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
Although optional due to remote learning, you may want to still have your students reflect on their writings from this school year using the Writing Portfolio Student Reflection which asks students to reflect on four of their writings from this school year and themselves as writers. The writings they choose to reflect upon may be in their digital writing portfolios (Google Folder on their Drive) or be any written piece this year from any class. Here is the
Writing Portfolio Student Reflection as a sharable Google Doc. (Reminder: teachers and students need to make a copy of the Google Doc before filling it out digitally and should not send a request to access the original.)
3. BORROWED NOVELS FROM SECONDARY CURRICULUM (SOUTHLAND CENTER)
Please box up any novels you have borrowed from Secondary Curriculum during the classroom closeouts/building closure time next week. You can arrange to have them sent to Carla Mae Phillips at Southland Center, Suite 125, or email cphillips3865 to arrange pick up.
4. SUMMER WRITING FOR INCOMING SENIORS
The district wants every student who will be a senior next year to spend some time this summer writing an essay for one of the prompts in the Common App. You can find the Common App Prompts on the ELA 6-12 Webpage by clicking on the Senior Common App Summer Writing Quick Link under "Summer 2020" on the main page.

The Berry Research Award provides research support for an NCTE member(s) who propose(s) a research project that studies “the careers of English Majors and/or the role and function of English in career development.” This award will also support the study of the impact of the English language in the broadest of senses as well as literacy-related majors such as writing studies, linguistics, and English education. OHIO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EDUCATOR LEARNING SERIES TO PREPARE FOR 2020-2021 ACADEMIC YEAR
COVID-19 has sent education into a remote learning environment, and educators have had to adapt, ready or not. In response to this change, the Ohio Department of Education and their partners, Science Education Council of Ohio (SECO), have developed a venue for educators to ask questions and collaborate with colleagues to build foundations for their instruction during the 2020-2021 academic year. On Wednesday, June 3rd, educators from ELA, World Languages, Social Studies, Science, and Technology can partner on the topic of Unpacking Lessons Learned from 2020. The link to that meeting has not been released yet, but will be found at the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies Resources page in the near future.

VIRTUAL OHIO TEACHER LEADERSHIP SUMMIT, JUNE 10
The 2020 Ohio Teacher Leadership Summit will be conducted virtually, bringing together schools, districts, and organizations doing innovative work to develop teacher leaders. Attendees will share successes, lessons they’ve learned and strategies for overcoming challenges in teacher leadership implementation. The summit offers participants opportunities to become part of a statewide network of teacher leaders and administrators promoting and strengthening teacher leadership in Ohio. GIFTED ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Ohio Department of Education is accepting membership applications for those interested in serving on the Gifted Advisory Council. Members will represent a variety of stakeholders from diverse regions of the state, including parents, general and gifted educators, administrators, and others. The Operating Standards for Identifying and Serving Students Who are Gifted (Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15) established the formation of a Gifted Advisory Council. The Council explores the development and implementation of state policies that affect identification, instruction, professional supports, leadership and funding for gifted education. Book Scavenger-Something Fun For Students This Summer
- STEP 1: Choose a book! Acquire a copy of any one of your favorite books that you’d like to share with others.
- Step 2: Hide the book in a public place for another reader to discover. Report the hidden book at HIDE & FIND BOOKS so readers know to seek it out.
- Step 3: Share your experience on social media using #BookScavenger. If you want to find a book, visit HIDE & FIND BOOKS or LATEST ACTIVITY to see if there is one hidden near you. When you have found a book, make sure to report your find at HIDE & FIND BOOKS. Then start at Step 1 and keep the cycle going. Let’s see how far these books can travel!

SUMMER READING CHALLENGES
1. Shelf Stuff Summer Reading Challenge:
Each week this summer, they’re challenging you to read one of their favorite books and take a quiz on that book to test your knowledge. Each quiz you take enters you to win our Shelf Stuff VIP prize pack! Here is the Shelf Stuff Flyer with all the books listed. 2. Mensa For Kids Excellence in Reading Program:
To encourage the joy of reading, the Mensa Foundation has developed the Mensa for Kids Excellence in Reading Program. Students can earn a commemorative certificate in recognition of their outstanding achievement and get an Excellence in Reading T-shirt, too! The lists are long, so you can encourage students to do partial lists or allow summer just to be the start of their reading goal and allow it to continue throughout the school year. SYNC is a free summer audiobook program for teens 13+.
Xavier University K-12 Reading Program
The Xavier University K-12 Reading Program has opened early, reduced rates, and converted all classes to a live online format, to help parents and schools maintain student education during these unusual times. The live, teacher-led online classes are available now and throughout the summer, for Pre-K through 12th grade students. The curriculum is high caliber and has been taught in a live, online format for 5 years already with over 50,000 school-age students. The classes are led by highly-trained teachers with many years’ experience teaching effectively in online classrooms. Skills taught include:
- Early Elementary: letter recognition, phonemic awareness, sight words, phonics
- Mid-to-Late Elementary: fluency, phonics, long-word decoding, comprehension, textbook reading, writing
- Middle and High School: doubling reading speed, comprehension, writing, notetaking, test preparation, textbook strategies

EduHam at Home-Student Performance Submissions Accepted
REGISTER HERE for EduHam at Home. It is an extension of the Hamilton Education Program (EduHam), which has served more than 160,000 students across the country since 2016. Through EduHam, students study primary source documents from the Founding Era, learn how Lin-Manuel Miranda used such documents to create the musical Hamilton, and finally create their own original performance pieces based on the same material.
EduHam at Home provides a family version of EduHam that can be accomplished outside of a school setting. It will continue to be available through August 2020.
What should you expect from this free program?
- A personal welcome video from Lin-Manuel Miranda greeting participants, as well as tips and guidance from EduHam teachers to help students create their own work
- Video highlights from past student performances for examples of what to try at home
- A wealth of free materials for participants and their families to explore and enjoy, including
- Videos clips from Hamilton and interviews with Lin-Manuel Miranda, selected cast members, and Ron Chernow, whose biography of Alexander Hamilton inspired the musical
- A wide selection of primary sources centered on a diverse group of 45 People, 14 Events, and 24 Key Documents
EduHam at Home participants will be invited to submit their own Hamilton-inspired pieces (songs, raps, spoken-word poems, or scenes), and selected student performances will be shared on social media and this website.If you have any questions, please email eduhamhome@gilderlehrman.org.
