Mr. Mashburn and Mrs. Yutzy attended training for the new STEM curriculum for K-5th grade.
FES is excited to announce that we have been selected to participate in the BCS/Duke Energy STEM Pilot Program! Over the next few weeks our Green Hall computer lab will be transforming into a creative, collaborative space for students to explore the engineering design process with hands-on design challenges.
Challenges for each grade level will align with classroom science standards and throughout the rest of the school year, students will complete 5 design challenges. The STEM lab facilitator, Justin Mashburn, will collaborate with classroom teachers and our media specialist, Karen Yutzy, to deliver engaging content to students starting November 14.
One of the most important elements of this program is that students will be tasked with solving real-world problems. These scenarios will allow students to practice working collaboratively with a small team and think critically about how to best define the problem, imagine a solution, plan implementation, test their theory, and improve their design.
Come by with your family to preview the new STEM lab on STEAM Night, which is November 7, but know that it will still be a work in progress for some time to come. We are excited about some of the new equipment the pilot program provides - including a Makerbot 3D printer, iPADs, and several different programmable robots, including Spheros and Dash & Dot.

Have you considered School Bus Transportation?
Every week during the school year, approximately 25 million children begin and end each day with a trip on a school bus. More than 450,000 school buses travel approximately 4.3 billion miles annually. Of all the vehicles that travel on our nation’s highways, none are safer than the school bus, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
One of the primary reasons school buses are so safe is because they meet more federal motor vehicle safety standards than any other vehicle on the road, 42 altogether, according to NHTSA. In addition, there are a number of emerging technologies on the market today to make school buses even safer, including video cameras on both the inside and outside of the bus, stop arm cameras, student and vehicle tracking technology, lane departure warnings, and collision mitigation systems, among others. School buses are built for durability and safety but there’s another significant, invaluable reason school buses are so safe – the professional men and women who drive them.
School bus drivers today must undergo extensive training to drive safely, as well as to monitor and protect the students onboard. School bus drivers must successfully complete a pre-service training course, including classroom instruction and behind the wheel training.
Beyond safety, riding the school bus is good for the environment. Every bus on the road replaces up to 36 passenger cars that would otherwise be on the road each morning and afternoon transporting students.
Buncombe County encourages you to let your child ride a school bus. The bus is the safest form of surface transportation. It is our goal to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation to our state’s most valuable resource-our children.
For more information about bus transportation at FES, please call Assistant Principal, Jamie Slagle, at 628-2732.
