February Newsletter
February 1, 2022
I say this every year, but it is hard to believe we are already past the midpoint of the 2021-22 school year! Our second semester started on January 18, and students are busy adjusting to their new schedules, changing classes, and participating in the numerous extracurricular activities Red River has to offer. Thank you to all of the students, faculty, staff, coaches, advisors, and parents who have helped make the 2021-2022 school year go well! There have been a lot of challenges, restrictions, and transitions but as a Red River team, we have adapted and continue to provide our students with great opportunities in both academics and extracurriculars.
Please review and record the following calendar items that may affect you and your family. On Wednesday, February 9 we will have a PLC Early Release, with classes being released at 1:00 PM. Spring Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 15 from 4:00-7:00. Conferences will be held in person this Spring with masks being recommended but not required. If you are unable to attend either of the conference nights, please reach out to your son or daughter’s teachers via email or by phone.
It just seemed like winter sports and activities started and we are already talking about them nearing the ends of their seasons. Please take a look at our Athletics Calendar https://www.easterndakotaconference.org/public/genie/187/school/68/ as our teams roll into tournament time the end of February and early March. Pay attention to @RRHSactivities for all activities happening in the upcoming month of February.
Red River students will be participating in the Student Engagement survey on Thursday, February 10. This state sponsored survey will provide Red River with data on how students engage in the classroom and school during the year. Freshmen and Juniors will take the Youth Risk Behavior survey on Tuesday, February 15. Collecting this data allows the Grand Forks community to access federal grant funding to continue to provide activities and efforts to prevent substance abuse.
After Snow Week was cancelled last year, it is set to resume next week, February 7-12. Rider Idol will kick off the week on Monday, the 7 th starting at 7:00 in the Performance Hall. Snow week will consist of theme days that will be released later this week on @RRHSactivities. The Snow Ball Dance will be on Saturday, February 12, 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM in the Small Gym. If your son/daughter plans to bring an out-of-school guest, please be sure they pick up the Guest Pass when they buy their tickets.
The 2022-23 Course Catalog is available online at the Red River High School website:
https://bit.ly/3m3ARoP . Please open and review the course options with your student(s) for next year. If you have any questions about courses for next year, please contact your counselor.
With so many upcoming tournaments and events, this would be a good time to remind your
child/children that they represent Red River High School at all extracurricular events. Good
sportsmanship is expected, and any infractions could result in school and/or legal consequences. Demonstrate positive Rider Pride as you cheer Red River on to victory!
“Grand Forks Public Schools will provide an environment of educational excellence that engages all learners to develop their maximum potential for community and global success.”

Vaping Concerns
Grand Forks Public Schools is extremely concerned about the prevalence of vaping devices on campus, as administrators and school resource officers regularly receive reports about their presence. In an effort to aid school officials in preventing these devices from being brought into our schools, beginning on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, we will begin using non-invasive metal detection wands on students who are reasonably suspected of hiding vaping contraband or other items that present safety concerns on their person in a private setting. Families will be contacted by school officials if their student has been suspected of vaping and/or if the wand has been used to rule out the presence of a suspected contraband. Thank you for your ongoing support of our efforts to keep our students and school environment safe.

HOSA
This month, Red River HOSA was very busy putting together the Teddy Bear Toss! Fans who attended the game tossed a teddy bears onto the court during halftime. RR and Central HOSA worked together to make this a great success. We sold teddy bears at our schools, and before the boys basketball game on Thursday night. The money we made off of these sales all went to CVIC, as did almost all the teddy bears. We could not have picked a better day to do this project- the basketball game was beyond exciting, with bleachers filled to the top with Red River and Central Fans. It was an extremely close game! The Red River boys played their hearts out, as did Central. Thank you to all the fans who participated in the event and to Ryan Cunningham for helping us broadcast the event.
For our monthly meeting on Tuesday January 25th, Mrs.Rowekamp talked about the upcoming SLC ( spring leadership meeting), an event for HOSA chapters across the state to participate in competitions and most importantly get to be more involved. More information will come later.
We already have plans for the month of February, so stay tuned!
Sincerely, Red River Hosa

Parents Lead
Get to know your child's friends - and their friends' parents.
An advantage to getting to know the parents of your child's friends is that you will know the kind of people that are influencing your child. Also, by getting to know the parents, you can verify your child's statements when he or she says, "All my friends get to do it." Most importantly, connecting with the families of your child's friend will help form a safety net for your child because you can help supervise each other's children and look out for their safety. It is common in small towns for everyone to know everyone even through generations! Here are several ways you meet other families: set play-dates, arrange to share driving with other parents for after-school activities, volunteer at your child's school, join PTO, attend faith-based activities, attend sporting events or other social gatherings, etc.
