The (NOT) Civil War
By Emma & Abbie
Union & Confederate Armies
Both the Union and Confederate armies didn't think the Civil War would last long. Robert E. Lee was asked to be the commander for the Union, but he declined and became the commander of the Confederacy. The North was fighting to free the slaves and to keep the Union together. The South was fighting to keep slavery and to break the Union. Both armies had a draft to gain more soldiers. Abe Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves who were fighting for the Union.
The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point for both the North and the South. The South had won nearly every battle for 2 years. Robert E. Lee had the Confederacy intrude the North for an attack, because he thought that it would cause the Union to surrender. Part of the attack was known as "Pickett's Charge" because General George Pickett had the Confederates go to the back of the Union's side where there were more soldiers, because he thought it would kill off a lot of the Union Army. Unexpectedly, the North fought back and killed off over one-third of the Confederate Army. The Confederates didn't want to invade the North anymore.

Medical Care
During the Civil War, medical treatment was very poor. 200,000 people died from injury, and 400,000 died from infection. Surgery was usually performed on a dinner table or a door. some of a surgeon's tools are:
Scalpel- a razor-sharp knife used to cut through flesh
Tourniquet- a tight bandage used to stop bleeding
Bone Saw- a saw used to remove bones of limbs before infection spreads
Splint- a device that keeps broken bones from moving
Bullet Probe- a device used to remove bullets from the body
Sometimes, especially in the South, doctors didn't have the medical tools listed above and used common items such as tree bark and cucumbers to treat wounds.
Conditions on the Home Front
There were many differences between the North and the South, but one similarity was that there was new job opportunities for women because a lot of men were away at war.
North
There was anger surrounding the draft and the ability for people to pay their way out. Because of that, riots began in New York.
South
There were many problems in the South that were more serious than the North's problems. The North troops were taking over their land and there was shortage in food and water. There was major stealing in south and their homes and farms were getting destroyed. The South is now slowly losing the Civil War.
