Beta Bears Service Project
By: Kaylie Cline
The Duran South Jr. Beta Club collected new stuffed animals for a September service project. The members collected a little over 100 stuffed animals. Half of the stuffed animals went to The Children's Place and the other half to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department. At the Children's Place children choose a new stuffed animal to take home as a way to comfort them after they have talked about possible abuse. Sheriff deputies keep these stuffed animals in their car in case of a call. There is a picture below of the members who went to deliver the stuffed animals.

What's It Like To Be New At Duran South?
I’m Kaleigh, and I’m a new student here at Duran South. Before I came here, I was a student at Irondale Middle School. My first day here was pretty cool and welcoming; I made a few friends in my PE and media class. I already knew one person, but my first friend I made here was a girl named Lauren. We played catch together with a small tennis ball. She seems fun and really nice. I made a lot more friends throughout the day. I am still shy, so the rest of the day still kind of scared me, but I think I’ll like it here.
My second day was a little better, I wasn’t as nervous. I made some more friends in PE. Lauren, some of my newer friends, and I told these two boys my name was Courtney. It was really funny and hard because I kept forgetting to respond to Courtney. Later in the day we played Jeopardy in science; I was playing with Sydney. We didn’t win, but we still had a lot of fun together.
The third day was fun; I got to know one of my friends better. When I was on the bus, its light got knocked off by a power line, and there were a lot of dogs where we were stopped. I still had fun; there were a lot of funny things happening.
My fourth day was a lot of fun. In PE I made another new friend. He was nice to me, and he was funny. He was also the first person here to ask if I wanted to be friends; it was funny but nice.
My fifth day started fun, in PE we played Wizard Ball. At the dance, I made a lot of new friends. I don’t remember their names though. I still had a lot of fun. So that's how my first week went here; I'm thankful for all of my new friends that made me feel welcome. I think it’s going to be a fun year.
7th Grade Football
Pell City’s 7th grade football team ended the season with a 6-2 record. We struggled at the start of the year in losing to Moody Blue Devils and the Helena Huskies. We gained confidence in the 3rd game ,which was against Etowah Blue Devils. We went from losing to average teams to beating the best. Our progress has taught people to never give up; keep on trying, and you will eventually achieve your goals.
Fall Dance
On October 12, 2018, the SGA sponsored the school fall dance. The dance was held in the school gym from 3:00 to 5:00. Kids had lots of fun dancing and chatting with friends! All money raised at the dance was for the SGA and Beta Club.We hope you come to other dances throughout the school year!
Contentment
Contentment is about being happy with what you have. Most people aren’t content today. Most people want to get the best thing they can get because they no longer feel happy with what they have. But most people get more and more content as they mature (get older). Usually people who are content won’t have the new iphone or Samsung Galaxy because they know they don’t need it, and they are happy with what they have. Content people will usually end up having older stuff, but it still pays out in the long run. Contentment isn’t about what you have; it’s about caring about the people around you. “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough” -Oprah Winfrey.
