Harvest Ball Canceled for 2021
This week our student leaders at East and Denfeld determined that it is time to officially cancel our fall semi-formal dances, Harvest Ball at East and Fall Ball at Denfeld. East's dance was tentatively scheduled for November 13. This decision was made at both sites due to high COVID case counts and the continued need for the indoor mask mandate within the Duluth Public Schools.
We had delayed this decision as long as possible in the hopes that circumstances with the pandemic would improve and they haven't. Postponement is not being considered due to the likelihood that case counts will continue to remain high or increase as we enter traditional cold and flu season. We apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment this causes our students and their families and continue to hope that mitigation strategies will help us turn the final corner so we can move on.
Please note that our student leaders and administration are evaluating opportunities to provide a semi-formal dance for our students in grades 9 and 10 sometime later this winter or in the spring. Harvest is our only semi-formal or formal dance that these grades are allowed to attend, and we will do our best to replace the opportunity later this year.
As of now, Sweetheart and Prom are still tentatively on the schedule.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. This was not an easy decision for either site.
School Safety: Driving, Biking, Walking - We need your help!
1. Students should not be dropped off in front of the school. Use Greyhound Drive - Doors 4 and 5 are open until 9:15 A.M.
IF YOU STOP IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, YOU BLOCK THE DRIVING LANE. This results in many people taking over the middle lane to enter the parking lot. That is an outbound lane and creates a significant safety issue.
2. At pick up time, please pull into a parking spot to wait for your student.
DO NOT STOP TO WAIT IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, IN THE TURN LANE ON 40TH, OR AROUND THE FIRE HYDRANT ISLAND.
3. In the afternoon, plan to drive all the way around the lot to exit. We have had significant traffic backups around the fire hydrant and will be blocking the lane on the back side in the afternoons. This should direct traffic all the way around the lot to exit again.
DO NOT STOP IN A DRIVING LANE TO WAIT FOR A STUDENT AT ANY TIME. This causes traffic to back up at the intersection in to the school and creates an incredibly unsafe situation for our pedestrians.
Please stay home if you're sick!
If your student is showing signs and symptoms of COVID-19, we are asking that you please keep them home and get tested or consult your healthcare provider for an alternative diagnosis. We are still seeing strep, influenza, and RSV circulating around the state and our area. It is imperative that they remain home when symptomatic to help us protect the integrity of in-person learning. We thank you for your help in keeping our school community safe. When in doubt, call our health office at 218.336.8845 ext 2114.

Expecting the Unexpected…..It is what we do every day. It is also what we teach our students. Problem solving and adversity are a reality. Sometimes the unexpected is more public.
You realize how amazing people are. Coaches from both teams step in, officials show up from other fields, and on their night off. The band jumps in and plays amazing music and performs without missing a beat, the Dance Team performs, not once, but twice. The Cheerleaders step up with cheer after cheer, the student section dressed in red and grey - sing the school song and never stop with positive energy, the press box crew jumps in to keep fans informed (best crew in Minnesota!), the concession workers are pressed into OT - as they volunteer to raise funds for the Football team, the chain gang waited patiently, East Coaches keep their team motivated and support the officials, the visiting coaches express support and model how to act in the face of adversity, and players on both teams - play with sportsmanship and class….Our processes and procedures for assuring assigned officials failed last week. Thankfully, it is the first time it had occurred in my tenure for varsity football., and to practice what I preach - in the end it is my responsibility. I am thankful for the official's association, the support from East parents, Grand Rapids, and others - and at the same time understand and accept the frustration. Teachable moments happen each and every day, some are in front of crowds, others are behind the scenes and that’s what makes High School sports awesome, it can bring out the best in people.
