LANGUAGE ACADEMY PARENT NIGHT
Last night NACP students, parents, teachers, and administrators proudly came together to celebrate Traditions, Heritage and Bilingualism at our Annual Language Academy Parent Night.
Student work showcasing their accomplishments in both languages was put together in a slideshow presentation which included videos of students responding to prompts about traditions, the importance of being bilingual, and student chefs giving directions for making a traditional dish from their parents mother country. Kindergarten teachers shared with attendees what the beginning of the program looks like for students of that age. Our fourth grade teacher, Ms. Aleman, and four of her students seamlessly showed off their bilingual superpowers as they engaged in a debate. Click above to watch the video, I know you will be amazed at their excellent performance and maybe they will convince you to favor video games or board games!
Our family night also included a panel composed of: (1) A parent of an NACP student and also of an alumni who graduated from the Dual Immersion Program at our school and is now an Honor student in middle school and student in fourth grade and former; (2) An Alumni of the Language Academy (mentioned above); (3) A current fourth grade student (mentioned above); (4) Teacher; and (5) Principal. The panel responded to frequently asked questions concerning students participating in a dual immersion program.
Our parent participant had the following words of advice to share with families:
Although it might seem hard at first, do not be discouraged, children are smart and they will learn both languages. Students will reclassify (to English Proficient), it might take a little longer but they eventually will. I have two daughters, one already graduated from the and is in middle school she is in Honors classes and my other daughter is also doing well in school. As a parent, I encourage you to work with the school and work with your children. We are a team.
Our student participants shared the benefits of being bilingual and also the most rewarding experience of learning two languages at NACP:
Being able to translate for those who may not know the language that is being spoken (whether that be English or Spanish). They thanked their parents for enrolling them in the Language Academy because that has given them the opportunity to communicate with a larger range of people who speak English and those who speak Spanish as well.
Our Alumni shared that she will be able to use her bilingual skills in the workplace when she is older, she also shared that being bilingual has helped her in middle school. Because she already knows both languages she will not have to learn Spanish in the future.
As shared last night, we have so much to be proud of. Our kids are doing amazing things. Thank you parents for your continued support and appreciation for the program. Our next event will be held in Spring!
