SCC Secures Funding for Ruby Road Bridge to Enhance Community Infrastructure
Nogales, Ariz. – Santa Cruz County has received a federal US Department of Transportation grant of $6.6 million from the Reconnecting Communities Pilot (RCP) and Neighborhood Access and Equity (NAE) Programs. The County previously announced an additional $3.6 million for this project from the direct congressional spending appropriations of Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Senator Mark Kelly, as well as $3 million from the State of Arizona’s discretionary fund. In addition, the County has received a grant of $3.3 million from the AZSMART program.
The grant is focused on the replacement of the Ruby Road Bridge located over Potrero Creek, which will become the sole bridge spanning both the floodplain and Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) line. The project addresses a critical east-west connection that will create reliable community access and improve safety for this underserved area.
Under the proposed timeline for the project, design work is estimated to conclude fall of 2024 with construction beginning in Spring of 2025 and project completion estimated mid-2026.
Key features of the Ruby Road Bridge Revitalization Project:
- Comprehensive Connectivity: The new bridge will provide a resilient and reliable east-west connection, bridging the gap between communities on both sides of the UPRR and the floodplain. This will greatly improve overall accessibility for all members of the traveling public.
- Inclusive Infrastructure: By accommodating pedestrians, bicyclists, and various other modes of transportation, the Ruby Road Bridge will cater to the diverse needs of surrounding communities. In turn, this promotes a healthier, more sustainable, and interconnected environment for all.
- Economic Stimulus: It is anticipated that this revitalization project will spur economic growth and development and benefit local businesses by facilitating convenient transportation of goods and services and attracting tourism to the area.
- Enhanced Emergency Response: The improved infrastructure will contribute to more efficient and thereby faster emergency services, ensuring the safety and well-being of community members and the traveling public in both routine and crisis situations.
