Synopsis
Jazz dance was born during the late 1800s. It is often mistaken for being an American creation, but it actually stems from the African American vernacular dance. Joe Frisco performed in vaudeville in 1910, and was deemed the first American “jazz dancer”. The real truth of jazz dance was that it was created by the slaves to express their emotions, and was also used as a tool by slave traders to keep the slaves fit. From this seemingly small outlet, history was made. Jazz dance was starting to be taught in studios in the 1940s, which brought a revival of the dance, making it a rough rival of classical ballet in popularity. Jazz dance then made its way on vaudeville and even some acts on Broadway. From there, Jazz dance has only grown.
