QBS Learning Centre News
Week beginning 7th October
Rebecca Stead wins the Guardian children's fiction award.
We love it when we know a book is fantastic before the critics do! Visit the Learning Centre and borrow a copy of A Liar and A Spy by Rebecca Stead. Rebecca is the first America to win this prestigious UK award.
Liar and Spy features Georges, for whom life gets steadily worse after he moves into a new apartment block. His dad has taken a pay cut in a new job, and his mum has to work longer shifts to make up. Luckily distraction is at hand, as Georges gets caught up in a game with another boy living in the block. Home-schooled Safer's spying game is scary but fun, while his home provides an interesting and supportive alternative refuge for Georges from his family problems. But gradually Georges begins to doubt everything he once took at face value, and to glimpse truths that he can no longer avoid. His journey of self-discovery is tenderly told within an exciting adventure.
Read it and decide for yourself. Appropriate for 10 years and up.

Great Reads
Take a look at our new section on the Learning Centre pages in Qoodle. You will find lots of book recommendations under the Great Reads banner. You will find plenty of inspiration for birthday presents, celebrations or just for library visits. We intend top add to this area as the year progresses so keep popping in for a look.
Apps gone Free
If you are interested in educational apps it is worth subscribing to Fun Educational Apps. Free Fridays and 5 free apps a day. Obviously not all will be appropriate for your child but they might save you a few dollars and improve your child's English or Maths for free.
This week.
A very busy week. Year 1 have been learning about fiction and non fiction. Year 2 were trying out our on-line picture dictionary and the 3s explored the atlas. Year 4 used a mind mapping tool to record their ideas about government services and the 5s improved their observation skills by using some thinking strategies. Year 6 has been learning about why we should reference our work even though it is time consuming.
New beanbags have arrived, a big order for new books has been sent in and our Wordle wall has been rubbed out and started again because the finish was not up to scratch. Children have been recommending me books and I have even been given some of the children's personal copies to keep me busy over the weekend! I love that we have such a community of readers at QBS.
Looking forward to more adventures and reading next week.
